Letter from the Editor

Welcome to the sixth edition of The Academy Journal, published by the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH). We would like to thank the AIA for its continued support, hard-working staff, and many member volunteers who have contributed to our growing and continued success.

The Journal is the official publication of the AAH and explores subjects of interest to AIA-AAH members and to others involved in the fields of healthcare architecture, planning, design, and construction. Our goal is to promote awareness and educational exchange and to broaden our base of understanding about our clients.

To date, the hard-working Editorial Review Committee (ERC) has reviewed 110 articles and responded to countless inquiries, encouraged numerous writers, and provided valuable opportunities for new and seasoned writers to be published. With this issue, the Journal has selected and printed 58 articles supporting the enhancement of the built environment for healthcare. Articles have been submitted by architects, physicians, nurses, other healthcare givers, academic research scientists, and students from the United States and, more frequently, from foreign countries. Published articles have explored a broad range of topics, including the future of healthcare architecture, cardiac care, creative innovations in ambulatory care, improved cancer care environments, emergency care, the bedless hospital, current trends and future forecasts of healthcare facilities, the future of women's care organizations, planning a Gamma knife center, and design-build in the healthcare project delivery process. Visit The Academy Journal archives for earlier articles you may have missed.

We have built upon our success by adding a separate section for Graduate Fellowship research project articles. We also continue our efforts to develop a cross-reference article index, develop a broader base of writers and readers especially from the international community, and explore the possibility of a sponsored hard-copy edition of the electronically printed articles.

My special thanks to the members of the ERC for 2003: James G. Easter Jr., Assoc. AIA; Ed Jakmauh, AIA, ACHA; Dennis Quagliani; Joyce Redden; and John Sealander, AIA. We are still learning, still experimenting, and still attempting to improve our process and product, and we appreciate your feedback and suggestions. Call AIA Professional Practice project manager Tarra D. Anthony at 202-626-7557 or me at 631-444-2536 with your comments.
