AIA Contract Documents are protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. Therefore, you cannot reproduce including by re-typing, photocopying or scanning, distribute, disseminate, sell, publish or circulate them without obtaining a license from the AIA. Rights to reproduce the AIA Contract Documents may vary for users of AIA software. Licensed AIA software users should consult the End User License Agreement (EULA). The AIA does not currently grant licenses to use the content from its documents to create any other documents including without limitation to custom or model contract documents or forms

The chart below summarizes the types of licenses you may obtain from the AIA. To obtain a license from the AIA, please review the chart, complete any required applications, and submit the application to AIA’s Intellectual Property and Contracts Manager at The AIA will evaluate your application and contact you to discuss the terms of the license and license fees, if applicable. As indicated in the chart below, there may be an application fee for processing your application.

Reproduction for Commercial Educational Purposes (Non-accredited)

License for authors, lecturers and publishers to reproduce sample AIA Contract Documents for educational and training purposes (e.g. seminar handouts and presentations, trade publications, textbooks, training manuals, other publications, and related electronic media e.g., CD-ROM, CD or intranet site with restricted access). The AIA will provide Sample documents in paper or PDF.

License to accredited colleges and universities to reproduce AIA Contract Documents in sample format for classroom use. The AIA will provide Sample documents in paper or PDF.

License to incorporate certain AIA Contract Documents in software for resale to purchasers.



Posting on Password Protected Intranet or Extranet Web sites


No additional license needed.


Posting on any Web Site for Commercial Purposes

License to post any AIA Contract Document that you prepare using the Software to an intranet or extranet Web site for any commercial purpose, including, without limitation, for bidding or negotiation of construction projects, and for marketing or promotion of projects or services. See EULA.

To report individuals, companies or organizations using AIA Contract Documents without a license from the AIA or in other ways that violate the AIA’s copyright (e.g. photocopying, reproduction, etc) send an e-mail containing the violator’s name and other contact information (e.g. e-mail address, mail address, and Web site address) to This information will be treated as confidential and not released to the violator or to anyone not affiliated with The American Institute of Architects.
