Women’s Leadership Development Summit: Cultivating the Next Generation of Leaders

The Women’s Leadership Development Summit was an engaging and dynamic event focused on helping women practitioners identify their personal and collective leadership to aid in developing skills to realize their potential. Topics presented and discussed included:

Skill Development * Diversity in Leadership * Alternative Career Paths * Transitioning to Positions of Leadership * Creating Your Mentorship Networks

George Miller, FAIA, 2010 President of AIA, provided the opening remarks. Keynote speakers included Jeanne Gang, FAIA, Principal and Founder of Studio Gang in Chicago, IL; Betsy Myers, who most recently served as a senior adviser to Barack Obama’s Presidential Campaign; and Rebecca Shambaugh, President and CEO of SHAMBAUGH, a leadership development firm in McLean, VA.


Women in Architecture and Design ATHENA Awards


The Summit Planning Committee partnered with ATHENA International to host the first annual Women in Architecture and Design ATHENA Awards.

Presented to leaders across professional sectors, the ATHENA Leadership Award’s rich history, international scope and focus on mentorship distinguish it as one of the most prestigious leadership awards one can receive.

The ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award actively supports and celebrates the ATHENA mission of supporting, developing and honoring women leaders, inspiring women to achieve their full potential—creating balance in leadership worldwide.

The joint efforts of the Summit Planning Committee and ATHENA International led to the development of the Women in Architecture and Design ATHENA Awards. This year’s recipients are:

Women in Architecture and Design ATHENA Leadership Award Recipient: Lori Garrett, AIA, Richmond, VA

Women in Architecture and Design ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award Recipient: Lira Luis, AIA, Chicago, IL
