The American Institute of Architects and the National Organization of Minority Architects Updates Memorandum of Understanding during Year of NOMA’s 40th Anniversary Celebration
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) renewed their 2009 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the first annual “Strength Through Diverse-Cities Multicultural Summit” in Dallas last month.
2012 AIA President Jeff Potter, FAIA, and 2012 NOMA President Sanford Garner, AIA, LEED AP, signed the MOU, which reflects a commitment by AIA and NOMA to continue and enhance their combined effort toward a more diverse and inclusive architecture profession and built environment.

“This MOU commits both organizations to continue our collaboration toward the shared goal of a profession that is not exclusive, but embracing; collaborative, not destructively competitive; a profession that is not hired by the few, but whose talents and creativity are available to all Americans; a profession whose heart is as big as the nation it serves,” said Jeff Potter, FAIA, during the signing.
The MOU is also a call to action fostering increased collaboration at the state and local level. Individual members and chapter leaders are encouraged to reach out to their respective AIA or NOMA chapter to jointly sponsor events, share meeting space, or simply begin a dialogue.
The signing of the MOU fell during NOMA’s 40th Anniversary Celebration, highlighted by their annual conference October 18-20. This year’s theme was “40 Years in the Making: A Legacy Driven by Design.”
AIA is very pleased to celebrate with NOMA as it marks this important milestone in its history.
