Communities by Design Prepares Digital Disaster Component Kit

The AIA Disaster Assistance Program is developing an innovative Digital Disaster Component Kit to facilitate efficient preparedness and coordinated response in the event of a disaster. The kit is a fully functional disaster preparedness curriculum that aggregates AIA Communities by Design’s resources to one website that runs independently off of a small USB drive.

The digital starter Disaster Assistance Component Kit will offer the guidelines and essential resources to help AIA components develop their own response plans and kits as well as resources to use in the event of a disaster. The information provided is geared assist in preparing in advance of a disaster - either natural or man made- to both ensure that AIA components continue to operate or reestablish operations quickly, and that local AIA members in affected areas are provided with timely and crucial information.

An overview of the project and how it merges strategically open technology with the programmatic needs of the Disaster Assistance Program can be found here: Disaster Assistance on a USB Stick, Powered by Drupal
Also there are available brief technical overviews explaining how the digital kit enables Getting a Web Server to run on a USB Drive and creating Database Backups for Drupal on a Stick.

Currently the prototype is scheduled to be distributed in beta form to AIA state components during the final quarter of 2007.
