Diversity and Inclusion > Diversity Action Plan Summary
The AIA Strategic Plan includes strategies to 1) Expand the racial/ethnic, gender, and perspective diversity of the design professions to mirror the society we serve and 2) Nurture emerging professionals and influence a preferred future for the internship process and architecture education. As the authoritative source and the credible voice of the profession, the Institute is taking the position that a more inclusive and diverse organization and profession is a strategic priority for the future.
To further this objective, the AIA drafted a 5-year Diversity Action Plan, which will influence diversity initiatives for the remainder of 2008 through 2013. In broad terms, the goal of the Diversity Action Plan is to move the AIA forward to become a more inclusive professional organization that reflects the changing dynamics of the population served by architects now and in the future. The membership of that future organization will be characterized by the multiple perspectives, backgrounds and skills of its members who represent its voice in the design and construction industry. Through its transformation, the AIA hopes to lead the profession and the Academy to also become more inclusive and to sustain their relevance in the future as well.
