General Public-FAQs

I am looking for an architect. What are my options?

Architect Finder displays the firms of AIA Architect members and connects you with the world’s finest architects.

In addition to Architect Finder, we recommend additional resources too.

In no particular order:

    1. AIA Components, nearly 300 located throughout the world, work closely with the public and may offer suggestions.

    2. Knowledge Communities offer AIA members and professional the opportunity to share ideas and knowledge. Choose from nearly twenty specialized communities to join and gain from. Please note that one does not have to be a member to join our 80,000 member community.

    3. Facebook, Twitter and FourSquare, each AIA Social Media groups, bring our members together and afford them opportunity to share ideas and knowledge.

I’ve never worked with an architect before. I don’t know where to begin.

Hopefully, you will find the following resources of help:

I am working with an architect and her firm is not listed in Architect Finder. Does this mean she is not a member of the AIA?

Architect Finder is a resource tool but by no means should one conclude that she is not a member of the AIA. To verify membership, please contact Information Central at 1-800-242-3837, op 2. Associates are available Monday-Friday from 8:00am-6:00pm (ET).

I completed a search and very few architects are appearing. I know that there are more architects in my area.

Please consider reducing or modify the search criteria. Factually, some firms may not have had an opportunity to update their firm profile. Thus, they will not appear in certain search types. In turn, a less strict search may yield higher results.

I am working with an Architect and they are not fulfilling their obligations. What options do I have?

One may consult the office the AIA General Council by contacting Cassandra Brown at cbrown@aia.org. Before doing so, please consider the information found on our web site.

How do I verify if one is a licensed architect?

While all AIA Architect members must hold at least one license, licensure is governed through NCARB. Please contact the state licensing board governing body to verify licensure. Their telephone number is 202-879-0520.

Is my architect in good standing? Are they a member of the AIA?

We can verify whether your architect is an active member of the AIA. We deem all active AIA members are in “good standing.” To verify membership, please contact Information Central at 1-800-242-3837, op 2. Associates are available Monday-Friday from 8:00am-6:00pm (ET).

Please note that membership is voluntary. While licensure for AIA architect members is a prerequisite, AIA membership is not a prerequisite for licensure.
