New Release: Handbook of Professional Practice

The AIA Bookstore is proud to introduce the newest version of an indispensable professional resource.

The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice is now available for purchase at the AIA Bookstore.  Orders are being taken online or by calling 800-242-3837 (option #4).

As the Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice has done for nearly nine decades, the 14th edition continues to bring together proven and reliable knowledge about all facets of architecture practice. All content in this edition has been substantially updated, and nearly a third of the material covers new subject matter.

Included are new topics on:

  • sustainable design
  • office administration
  • managing multiple offices
  • archiving records
  • managing fast-track projects
  • conducting value and life-cycle cost analyses
  • negotiating practice matters
  • lifelong learning
  • mentoring
  • team building

Major new treatments of programming, project management, construction contract administration, risk management, and ethics have also been added. Emerging issues regarding integrated practice, as well as small firm considerations, are addressed in relevant topics.

The 14th edition is logically organized under four major parts:

  • The Profession
  • The Firm
  • The Project
  • Contracts and Agreements

The appendixes contain lists of related organizations, copies of the 2007 versions of the A201 general conditions and the B101 owner-architect agreement, and a useful expanded glossary.

Significant features of the 14th edition include two accompanying CDs, one of which includes the complete text of the Handbook in a searchable format. The second CD contains more than 100 sample PDFs of all current AIA documents, including those released in 2007.

Experienced practitioners will find the 14th edition to be an indispensable resource about all aspects of architecture practice. Younger professionals seeking to acquire a more comprehensive grasp of the practice terrain will find this edition of the Handbook an invaluable guide and reference.
