The Energy Star Challenge for Architects

The AIA, an Energy Star Partner, has teamed up with Energy Star to launch the second annual Energy Star Challenge for Architects.

Our nation's buildings account for nearly 50 percent of the country's greenhouse gas emissions. Architects, therefore, have a unique opportunity to leave a mark on the world by designing buildings that are sustainable now and well into the future.

Last year, 23 firms participated in the first Energy Star Challenge for Architects. The impact of their sustainable design is evident:

  • 23 firms submitted 32 projects with superior energy design intent
  • Average EPA energy performance design rating of the projects: 87
  • Average annual energy and CO2 reduction: 40%
  • Annual CO2 emissions prevented: 40 million lbs/yr
  • Annual energy cost savings: $1 million
  • Projects achieving 50% CO2 reduction: 11

Take the Energy Star Challenge!

By taking the Energy Star Challenge, your firm demonstrates that its projects can reduce the demand for energy by achieving Designed to Earn the Energy Star and meet the goals set by the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

The AIA and EPA will recognize your efforts at the 2008 AIA National Convention and Exposition in Boston. For more information on how to take the Challenge, visit the Energy Star Web site
