Code Enforcement Used to Combat Urban Blight

While many communities are cutting back on code enforcement, one town in Ohio is stepping up efforts to enforce code compliance. Officials in Lorain, OH are making a big effort this summer to curtail code violations that could lead to urban blight. The most frequent problems cited by officials during the City Council meeting were both safety and aesthetic issues.

The City Council’s vote to establish code enforcement patrols and add two additional inspectors was unanimous, underscoring the city’s commitment to the project. The Mayor of Lorain, Chase Ritenaur, said that the town’s health, building and law enforcement departments would all contribute to the project.
