Meeting with members of Congress in person is one of the most powerful activities an advocate can do in their quest to affect positive change for their cause. On Friday, July 13, members of AIA South Carolina did just that by meeting with Representative James Clyburn (SC-6) in the component’s Columbia office.

The architects in attendance were Tom Savory, AIA, Luke McCary, AIA, and Keith Sanders, AIA. The members were anxious to talk with the Representative about getting back to work and seeing growth in construction in their state. The Congressman stayed for over an hour, allowing the members to speak to him about their desired topics and much more. Over the course of the meeting, the group discussed a wide range of issues, from strategies to identifying bills that could include funding of vertical construction to the first licensed African-American in South Carolina, who later became president of Representative Clyburn’s alma mater.

If reading about this meeting inspires you to schedule one with your own member of Congress, the AIA can provide you with the resources you need to do so. Members of Congress will be home for over a month starting August 6, which provides the best opportunity for AIA members to schedule these meetings through the remainder of the year.
