AIA Celebrates 10 Years of the International Code Council
By Stephanie Spear, Manager, Building Codes Policy

Mickey Jacob, FAIA, 2013 AIA President, honored the International Code Council (ICC) with a Presidential Citation at the Council’s Board of Directors meeting. The citation was to celebrate the ICC’s 10 year anniversary as a code development organization and the creation of the International Codes, the product of industry-wide efforts to provide a single set of coordinated, consolidated model codes.

Jacob took the opportunity to underscore the AIA’s dedication to working with the ICC, saying, “We’ve collectively devoted our professional lives not to tempt risk, but to minimize it. Whether or not a structure is safe, sustainable, and resilient cannot be left to a throw of the dice. How well we protect public health, safety, and welfare is the cornerstone of our reputation.”

Jacob also discussed the increasing importance of sustainable building practices. “A working definition of sustainability must now include not only energy; it must also include health and resilience,” he said. Jacob pointed to continued collaboration among ICC and its partner organizations, especially the AIA, as a solution to addressing the challenges presented by building and designing for the future.

2012-13 ICC president Ron Piester, AIA, ICC CEO Dominic Sims, CBO, and 2013-14 ICC president Steve Jones, CBO accepted the citation on behalf of the ICC, recognizing the vital role that AIA has played as an ICC strategic partner over the past decade.
