ArchiPAC Raises All Time Record of $152,000

By Wendy Perez Young, Manager, Political Action Committee & Compliance

ArchiPAC is proud to announce that it has raised an all-time record of $152,000 in 2012, surpassing 2011’s fundraising total by 21%. AIA membership participation has also shown growth from 1,334 members in 2011 to 1,438 members in 2012. ArchiPAC hopes to continue this upward trend in 2013 in preparation for the 2014 elections.

Through direct mail and the AIA Board of Directors Meeting, ArchiPAC raised nearly $4,200 last week alone. However, it was the last minute push made at the AIA Board of Directors Meeting that put ArchiPAC’s total beyond the $150,000 mark. During last Friday’s meeting, the newly appointed ArchiPAC Chairman Steve Jernigan, FAIA recognized former 2012 ArchiPAC Chairman Jim Rains, FAIA with a plaque in appreciation for his past fundraising achievements in ArchiPAC. Members of the board responded with a standing ovation as Rains accepted his plaque. Immediately after the presentation, an announcement was made by both Jernigan and Rains that less than $500 was needed to surpass the $150,000 mark. All across the room members raised their hands with pledges in support for ArchiPAC putting it well over $150,000. The room roared with applause and excitement when the new total was reached. The members of the AIA Board of Directors have a history of being extremely supportive of ArchiPAC. In both 2011 and 2012, ArchiPAC received 100% participation from the board.

ArchiPAC is the political action committee of The American Institute of Architects. Since PACs are prohibited from using corporate dollars to directly support political campaigns, every dollar raised for ArchiPAC is from voluntary personal donations of AIA members. Through ArchiPAC, AIA members and staff are able to attend campaign events and support candidates who will consider AIA’s viewpoint before casting a vote. By partaking in ArchiPAC, AIA is able to send a clear and strong message to both Capitol Hill and other construction industry groups on its political stance. ArchiPAC is not as large as some of its affiliates – in the 2012 election The National Association of Home Builders raised $1.8 million and The Associated General Contractors raised $900,000 - but with a membership size of 80,000 ArchiPAC has a lot of potential for growth and will undoubtedly break more records in 2013 and beyond.
