2012 President Jeff Potter, FAIA and 2012-2013 Treasurer Gabriel Durand-Hollis, FAIA traveled to Rio de Janeiro to explore international opportunities for architects. Brazil is undergoing significant growth as their middle class grows. In addition, two large sporting events, the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games will be hosted in Brazil. Rio will be the host for the Olympic Games and AIA members are part of that action.

Jeff and Gabriel met with the CAU, the Counsel for Architecture and Urbanism, which is the newly created licensing board in Brazil. In addition, they met with ASBEA, the Brazilian Association of Architecture Firms and the IAB, the Brazilian Institute of Architecture. These meetings gave the AIA an opportunity to discuss shared issues between the organization, like education and licensing in both the US and Brazil. Finally, the AIA met with local AIA members in an effort to understand the market and it’s challenges from individuals who are working there.

Given the enormous amount of work that must be completed in the coming years, the AIA is looking for ways to assist members in their desire to work in Brazil. Keep checking back for more information about Brazil and other international opportunities!
