The AIA & ITA to Lead Qatar Mission

<p>The International Trade Administration and the American Institute of Architects will lead the <a href=>first Architecture Services Trade Mission to Qatar</a> from November 17-19.</p>.

<p>The AIA will host <a href=>Working Abroad: Pros, Cons, and Ways Forward</a> workshop. This training session to help you and your firm take advantage of the numerous architectural opportunities in thriving and emerging overseas markets. Working Abroad: Pros, Cons, & Ways Forward will provide you with first-hand knowledge of the ins and outs of working in foreign countries.</p>

Importance of International Trade

International markets offer a number of opportunities to expand your practice. While many economies across the globe have seen tough economic times over the past five years, some have continued to grow. These countries offer markets that need to meet to the demands of growing populations and economies. Many have a large need for infrastructure, including hospitality, resort facilities, multi-family homes, airports and master planning as examples, but they lack the number of experts required to complete all projects.

While working abroad does present a number of challenges, with the right preparation you can be successful. Regulatory regimes and business cultures vary across the globe and require attention. There are, however, a number of resources, such as the International Trade Administration, that can help you better understand the business environment. Some countries may have more barriers to entry than others, but these may be outweighed by potential return on investment.

What’s a Trade Mission?

Trade missions are great opportunities to expand your business. The organized trips serve as a way to explore international business opportunities by way of introduction to the country, government officials, potential partners, clients, and other contacts. In addition, the US government will provide briefings on business practices, regulatory challenges, and other business intelligence from the country.

Going on an official U.S. trade mission enhances the ability to secure key appointments while traveling to a country. Missions will help participants gain market insights, industry contacts, regulatory knowledge, and business strategies. There are a number of appointments with various business leaders, potential buyers, agents, distributors, and partners. Meetings with government officials from all levels will usually be included as a part of a mission. Missions will also have networking event that will allow you to further build these relationships.


Commerce will be running the selection process and they have stressed that it is beneficial for the applicant to follow their instructions and get the applications in early. The selection process is rolling, so the earlier the application is submitted, the more likely there will be openings to participate.

Mission recruitment will be conducted in an open and public manner, including publication in the Federal Register, posting on the Commerce Department trade mission calendar ( and other Internet websites, press releases to general and trade media, direct mail, broadcast fax, notices by industry trade associations and other multiplier groups, and publicity at industry meetings, symposia, conferences, and trade shows.

The Small Business Administration - The Small Business Administration (SBA) provides assistance to small businesses through access to capital, entrepreneurial development, government contracting, and advocacy.

The Export-Import Bank of the United States - The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) is the official export credit agency of the United States and assists in financing the export of U.S. goods and services to international markets.

The World Bank - The international financial institution offers a number of opportunities for bidders and consultants for the projects they fund worldwide.
