Op-Ed by AIA President Jeff Potter and Noted Historian David McCollough on the Capitol dome |
AIA Position |
The AIA urges Congress to provide the funds necessary to perform needed repairs to the U.S. Capitol and its dome, an international symbol of American democracy. |
Background |
The Capitol dome is currently in desperate need of repair, endangering this national monument and the safety of those who work in the Capitol. The Capitol represents the American ideals of democracy across the world; it would send a terrible message if Congress neglects its duty as stewards of this historic treasure. There is little disagreement that the federal government, including Congress, must live within its means. However, delaying needed repairs will end up costing taxpayers in the long run as defects worsen and costs increase. In addition, funding repairs of the dome will create desperately needed jobs in the design and construction industry. Every nation places a priority on maintaining its most precious monuments; the United States should not be any different. As the centerpiece of the Capitol complex and one of the most visible, iconic structures in the nations’ capital, the Capitol dome is a crucial national landmark, steeped in history and tradition. |
