REMINDER: Meet with Your Legislator During This Recess

By Amanda Stratton, Manager, Grassroots & Advocacy Outreach

We need your help to get the word out about AIA issues, and this week’s Memorial Day congressional recess offers you the perfect opportunity to do so by meeting with your legislators in person! Face-to-face communication with members of Congress and their staff is the most impactful activity AIA members can participate in. Legislators bring your stories back to Washington and take them into account when considering policies that could impact architecture firms and the built environment.

The recess occurs from May 24 to June 2, meaning legislators will be in the home districts for over a week. You still have plenty time to schedule a meeting with the lawmaker or a member of their staff. You can even meet with your legislator at already-scheduled events, such as town hall meetings. Check your legislators’ websites and your local paper to see when they will be in your hometown.

Some tips and tricks for attending town hall meetings & other public events: If you know that you will be attending an event where one of your legislators will be present, it can be helpful to let the staff in the district office know a few days before that you would like just a few minutes with the legislator. By knowing about your request, it is more likely that they will make sure the legislator meets with you, even it is just for a few minutes. Additionally, because your time with the legislator will be significantly shorter than in a regularly scheduled meeting, keep your message short. Practice what will you say beforehand, focusing on the most important one or two main points.

Once you have identified where you are meeting the legislator, consult the talking points and don’t forget to tell us about it! We want to hear your meeting summary and see photos. They may even be featured on our Facebook and Twitter sites!

If you aren’t able to set up a meeting for this recess, there are plenty of opportunities coming up! The next recess will be from June 29 to July 7, and the longer August recess starts on August 3. When you speak with the staff members in the district office, let them know that you are available for meetings during these periods as well.

If you have any questions about how to set up a meeting, Advocacy staff are here to guide you through the process. Contact Amanda Stratton, and she will help you get started today!
