Susanka, AIA, award-winning architect and author of the best-selling Not
So Big House books, and Julie Moir Messervy, renowned landscape
designer and author of The Inward Garden
and Contemplative Gardens, will
be collaborating on a new book entitled Outside
the Not So Big House. The latest addition to the best-selling Not
So Big House series, to be published by The Taunton Press in 2006,
will address the landscape surrounding a house and connections between
inside and outside.
Susanka Studios currently is seeking submissions of professionally designed
houses and their landscapes to be featured in this upcoming book. The
selected projects will have “exceptional landscaping, where the
space surrounding the house is as much a part of home as the house itself.
The emphasis will be on the landscape but will very much include the interior
and exterior of the house.” The authors say they are looking for
“projects that have both the qualities of comfort and inspiration.”
Additionally:
- Entries may be located in any geographic location, climate, zone,
or setting, be it urban, suburban, town, or country.
- Submitted projects need to have been completed for at least three
years to ensure that the landscape has had time to grow in.
- The house and landscape should enhance each other and be consistent
with the “Not So Big” concept, emphasizing quality of space
rather than a specific size.
- The inside of the house needs to be as well designed as the landscape
to demonstrate the visual connections between inside and out.
- Preference will be given to houses under 3,000 square feet on the
main and upper levels, but outstanding gardens of larger homes will
be considered.
- Homeowners must be willing to open their house to a photographer
and sign releases for the publication of their property; the book's
photographer will take all final photographs.
Submissions are due October 15.
