The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Research Center and Head
Architect: Seidel/Holzman
The building is located in the foothills overlooking Stanford University. The low profile structure is designed to respect the extraordinary natural character of the site by preserving heritage valley oaks, minimizing grading and impervious surfaces, and incorporating natural materials such as the plywood siding stained to blend with the dried grasses prevalent a the site. The building plan incorporates both open plan work areas as well as private offices for scholars. The entire building has access to abundant natural light and captures the prevailing breezes with natural ventialation. Exposed wood structure is perhaps the dominant architectural theme of the interior. A variety of porches, terraces and landscape areas expand the activities of the foundation out of doors. The forum terrace, including its grand stair, and the informal outdoor amphitheater, are two well used areas that embrace a particularly magnificent heritage oak tree near the center of the building.
