Description:
On the corner of Woodward Avenue, a prominent Detroit thoroughfare, emerges Wayne State University. The Wayne State University Welcome Center is a gateway for this urban campus, which is located in the heart of Detroit’s Cultural District. The Center’s 32-foot glass façade facing Warren Avenue draws in all who pass it by. The extensive use of Mankato stone and glass communicates openness and a sense of strength. Expanses of glass look out onto Old Main – a century-old campus icon – to reinforce the historic roots of the university and to produce an environment of historic familiarity for students and family alike. Inside, visitors relax in the student lounge, attend presentations in the auditorium, buy books and learn about campus activities. The grand staircase is a focal point within the lobby.
