Located in the vast landscape of an 18th century horse farm in Virginia, a structure of striking simplicity and poignant energy efficiency houses a foundation for environmental issues in Virginia.
A decision was made to place the new building southeast of the stable and relate the two buildings formally. A series of reclaimed Douglas Fir columns and trusses, set upon a radiantly heated Bluestone plinth, defines the building’s structure, while a ribbon of fir sliding doors surrounds the structure’s occupants with nature. To modulate sun and privacy, slatted wood structures, balanced by cast iron counterweights, slide vertically on the centers of the columns.
