Biography
Jean Louis Pascal studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under E.
Gilbert and Charles-Auguste Questel. He worked with Charles Garnier
on the Paris Opera from 1861 to 1866. He then designed the home and
atelier of William Bouguereau.
Pascal joined Henri Labrouste in 1870. In 1871 he was in charge of
the project to reconstruct the Pavillon de Flore and the Grande
Gallery of the Louvre. He also designed the French National Library
additions in Paris; the library's periodical newspapers room is one
of his most recognized projects.
In 1872 Pascal took over Questels atelier at the Ecole des
Beaux-Arts. It quickly became one of the most popular studios at
the school, especially among British and American students.
In 1866 Pascal won the Grand Prize of Rome, and in 1914 he received
the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British
Architects.
