The Building Performance Knowledge Community is the
reformation of the Building Codes and Standards (BCS) Public
Interest Area which replaced the earlier Building Performance
and Regulations Committee. We have successfully accomplished our
1971 mission of initiating the process toward a single code for the
United States. The widespread adoption of the International
Building Code (IBC) is currently being directed by AIA Government
Affairs. The AIA is also monitoring the efforts of the National
Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) efforts to produce a national
building code. Education and training on building code issues will
remain an integral part of our BP Knowledge Community
program.
Goals
- Act as the AIA's provider of information, expertise, and
education on building performance issues through conferences,
publications, and workshops.
- Form alliances with codes and standards organizations and
government agencies, including NIBS, NIST, ASHRAE, NFPA, SBIC, DOE,
NREL, EPA, PATH, Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
- Coordinate purpose and collaborate on activities to educate
architects, building owners, and facility managers on the benefits
of design using building performance criteria.
- Establish a national building performance research agenda to
understand the needs of architects and encourage the development of
design metrics for building performance.
- Establish an education forum to teach architects, building
owners, and building departments how to use building
performance.
- Develop a database of examples of successful building
performance.
