CAFM: What Your Knowledge Community is Doing For You

Dear Members of the Corporate Architects and Facility Management Knowledge Community (CAFM):

As the 2008 chair, I would like to thank you for your membership in CAFM. Approximately 6,200 AIA members have identified themselves with this Knowledge Community. Many are architects, and others are working as corporate architects and facility managers. We want to understand your particular interests and challenges and provide resources for you to network and equip you in your role. As we continue to move forward please keep the CAFM Mission in mind:

The CAFM Knowledge Community is a partnership of owners and architects working for or within corporations or other client organizations engaging and informing its members to advance their professional goals and knowledge base. Our mission is to facilitate the generation and exchange of knowledge valuable to KC members in order to promote professional development and promote a positive impact on the built environment.

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on CAFM’s accomplishments for 2007 and inform you of our goals and programs for this year:

AIA Convention Education and Outreach

  • Education programs at the AIA Convention distribute knowledge to a cross-section of the profession, and are consistent with the goal of developing the role of the CAFM KC as the corporate clients’ platform within the AIA, and the CAFM KC as the AIA representative to corporate clients. In 2007, we presented a workshop on Integrated Practice, a critical issue to our KC members.
  • In Boston in 2008, CAFM will co-present a half-day workshop on sustainable design for corporate facilities with the AIA Committee on the Environment, offering 3.75 CES LUs:

Greening Where We Work: Case Study of Genzyme Headquarters (WE63)
May 14, 2008, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

This off-site pre-Convention work session convenes in the AIA award-winning Genzyme headquarters, renowned for its innovative sustainable design. A panel composed of the owner, architect, and builder will engage attendees in a discussion of the project. Attendees will then be engaged in a discussion with a panel of three owners committed to sustainable design as a corporate strategy: Genzyme, Kaiser Permanente, and Bank of America.
Learning Objectives:

  • Examine and discuss an AIA award-winning corporate headquarters that has been designed and operated in accordance with the highest level of sustainable design
  • Engage in a discussion with the owner, designer, and builder focusing on sustainable design as a team effort
  • Use sustainable design as a corporate strategy and engage in a dialog with owners committed to this strategy

Moderator: David Alpert, AIA, LEEP A.P.; Speakers: Christof Jantzen, AIA, LEED A.P.; John Kouletsis, AIA; Norm Lamonde, LEEP A.P.; Rick Mattila; and John Lijewski.

For more info or to register see visit the AIA Convention Web site.

Component Connections Events to Engage Members

  • The expertise of architects working in alternative careers is reinforced by the knowledge generated through CAFM, and their professional experience and goals can be enhanced through membership in the AIA. One way that we are doing this is through our Component Connections events that we are hosting along with the Public Architects Knowledge Community. These networking events offer an opportunity to meet with local professionals to discuss the level of interest in developing a CAFM/PA component in their city. The events are typically held in conjunction with another AIA event at a venue that would be of interest to architects, corporate architects, and facility managers.

  • Each year, CAFM organizes and hosts a Networking Reception in conjunction with the Public Architects KC at the national AIA Convention. The purpose is to provide an opportunity for KC members to network, as well as to build a relationship with the AIA Students (AIAS) membership through their Freedom by Design program. Sponsorships from the event will provide grant money to AIAS / Freedom by Design and solicit volunteers for a convention city Freedom by Design project.

  • If you will attend the 2008 AIA Convention in Boston, please join us at this year’s event:

AIA Committee of Corporate Architects and Facility Management and Public Architects Committee Networking Reception (E19)
May 15, 2008, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Join the AIA Committee of Corporate Architects and Facility Management and the AIA Public Architects Committee for an evening of networking and fun at the South Boston Seaport District's newest event facility, Lighthouse II. Lighthouse II has striking views of Boston Harbor and the surrounding skyline. Brennan Beer Gorman Architects and Brennan Beer Gorman Monk Interior (BBG/BBGM) of New York City designed the building with a cutting-edge LED feature wall. This reception supports the Freedom by Design program so come hear about the great things the American Institute of Architecture Students is achieving through the program. Enjoy hors d'oeuvres, an open bar, and the excitement of door prize drawings.

For more info or to register see visit the AIA Convention Web site.

Allied Organization Collaboration

  • CAFM build relationships with other Knowledge Communities, academic institutions with degrees in architecture and facilities management, and allied organizations including such as the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA), Building Owners Management Association (BOMA), Construction Users Roundtable (CURT), and Corporate Real Estate Network, (CORENET).
  • IFMA (International Facilities Management Association) is a separate professional organization that represents many of the same constituents as CAFM. Each year, CAFM collaborates with IFMA to prepare and present an educational track at the IFMA World Workplace conference. Please see more information about the 2008 World Workplace conference at: http://www.worldworkplace.org.

CAFM Scholarship and Emerging Professional Outreach

  • Each year, CAFM awards scholarship(s) to qualified students interested in pursuing a career related to CAFM. We are pleased to have the collaboration of AIAS, ACSA, and the American Architectural Foundation to make this opportunity available to develop awareness about career opportunities in corporate architecture and facility management.

Communications

CAFM Volunteeer Leadership and Opportunties to Participate

  • The Advisory Group is made up of professionals who represent the diversity of the roles of corporate architects, facility managers, and the design consultants that work with them. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to David Mayer, AIA, of Lowes for his tremendous efforts as the 2006 Chair, and Kelly Burris, AIA, of State Farm Insurance, for her role as 2007 Chair, and ongoing leadership. We are lucky to have Kelly serving again in 2008 as Past Chair. For 2008, I welcome our newest member Paul Fach, AIA, of Computer Sciences Corporation. Paul joins Peter Shannon, AIA of Jones, Lang, LaSalle and Nancy Hamill Governale, AIA, CEM, of Illinois Institute of Technology, as members of the CAFM Knowledge Community Advisory Group.
  • In addition, committees are being formed to assist the Advisory Group in advancing CAFM strategies, and we need your participation. If you are interested in working on any of these committees, we welcome your involvement. They include:
    • Communications Committee—develops the content of the Knowledge Community’s Web site, eNewsletter, etc.
    • Allied Organizations Committee—continues to strengthen the relationship with the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA). As relationships are developed with other organizations, this committee may develop into subcommittees to maintain those relationships.
    • Programs Committee—responsible for coordinating and developing submissions for presentations and workshops at the AIA Convention, AIA Component Programs, Grassroots Conference, etc.
    • Outreach Committee—responsible for coordinating Component Connections, networking receptions, etc.

CAFM wants to support and equip you professionally with the resources you need to achieve your professional goals. We would very much like to hear from you regarding your needs and challenges so that we can better address them.

If you have any questions or comments or wish to become more involved in CAFM please email cafm@aia.org.

Sincerely,

David Alpert, AIA, MBA, LEED – 2008 Chair
