Intern Development Program and AIA Continuing Education

Interns may earn IDP Supplemental Experience hours by completing approved AIA Continuing Education programs-one AIA CEU/LU is equal to one IDP experience hour. When submitting to NCARB, LU’s must be documented on the intern’s AIA Transcript.

Any intern in IDP can request a free AIA Transcript here:

How It Works

1. Attend an AIA approved continuing education course or event.

AIA Components and AIA CES registered providers sponsor continuing education events. When interns attend an event they should follow the AIA registered architects’ lead by signing in with their name and AIA member number. Event providers are responsible for submitting the attendance information to AIA, which maintains CES records. Course providers are given ten (10) days from the date of the course to report all attendance. Completed course LU’s will then appear on AIA transcripts.

2. Download an AIA transcript.

Interns can download a copy of their AIA transcript by signing into the AIA CES Discovery website at any time (or request a transcript in writing, one free each year). Print a PDF copy of the transcript for the date range of the courses completed.

3. Report hours through your NCARB Record.

Report course work through your NCARB Record system by clicking the “IDP” tab and selecting “Experience Reports.” Click “+ New Experience Report” to create a new Supplemental Experience report. A PDF of the AIA transcript documenting completion of AIA-approved courses must be uploaded as proof of completion for the AIA Continuing Education Supplemental Experience. Multiple courses may be submitted via one experience report as long as they each appear on the transcript that is uploaded.

Watch the How-To Video

*The process for accessing AIA CES Discovery has changed slightly from the video content below. In addition, NCARB has launched a new NCARB Record platform. An updated “How-to” video will be launched soon, based on NCARB’s My Examination addition to users’ records. Thank you for your patience!
