Members are required to obtain a minimum of 20 points in Association-directed activities and 80 points in Self-directed activities.

The MAA specifically identifies certain activities that will be recognized as "Association-directed" in each two year period (something which has generally been comprised of certain courses that have been offered by the MAA or the Royal Architectural Institute of Manitoba, together with certain distance education opportunities --- on an extremely limited basis, there have been courses offered by other organizations that have been recognized in a specific period).

The MAA has defined criteria for self-directed study, which involves a variety of activities (ranging from organized and structured courses, to professional tours, committee work, reading, etc.). There is a minimum duration for each activity to qualify and there are limitations with respect to the extent of credit that will be provided for every kind of activity that is identified (aside from organized and structured courses, which have no maximum for a specific period).

In accordance with the MAA requirements, members are responsible for self-determining 80% of the continuing education that they must undertake in a two year period, enabling each one of them to structure a program that is truly relevant to their own stage of their career and personal employment situation, etc.
