Stroll through the Center and visit the exhibit-Italian Dressing: Palladio and American Classicism exhibition. In celebration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of 16th century Italian architect Andrea Palladio, the Virginia Center for Architecture explores the influence of his work on a new generation of architects in America. Also see work by several modern architects inspired by Palladio, including Jaqueline T. Robertson, a Richmond native and former Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia.

With information generated from discussion forums with CACE and AIA members held in various locations, a plan that offers a potential road map for building leadership knowledge, skills and abilities as a career goal, has been created.  A set of tools has been assembled as a journal for personal exploration of what is and how to become an engaged leader. This session continues to build on the challenge to the architectural profession to actively embrace civic engagement. Attend this session to explore next steps and contribute to meeting the leadership challenge.

The panelists will review CES resources for components including a Roundtable Toolkit, Memorandum of Understanding, Marketing Templates, Podcasts How To's, and Speaker Agreements, as well as examples of list servs and communication tools that can be used to engage your membership into interactive and leadership roles.  In addition, you'll learn about new, easy, and exciting ways to deliver AIA CES programs that serve as potential non-dues revenue generators.

After a tour of the State Capitol, designed by Thomas Jefferson in 1785, the group will head to Jamestown to learn more about the archaeological excavation that has uncovered hundreds of thousands of artifacts dating to the first half of the 17th century. The final destination is Colonial Williamsburg to see some of the historic buildings and colonial sites.

Session 3. Preparing for the AIA's Sustainable Design Mandatory Continuing Education

The AIA Board of Directors' vote to create a sustainable design mandatory continuing education (MCE) requirement for members goes into effect on January 1, 2009 and continues through December 31, 2012. As this area becomes increasingly mainstream and embedded in practice, the profession must continuously take responsibility for their role in creating the built environment. This session will discuss the role of sustainable design continuing professional education in advancing the AIA Strategic Plan's sustainable design initiatives such as SustAIAnability 2030 and 50to50.  The session will also explore plans of action for components and the AIA national continuing education department in working collaboratively to meet both the overarching strategic initiatives and member needs.

In the tradition of epic drama, you'll hear about the panelists' experiences-The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly-on digital verses paper submissions, FTP sites, jury selection, categories, and The Big Event.

Next spring, the AIA will replace TIMSS (a.k.a. "the membership database") with netFORUM, our new association management system (AMS). This presentation will update you on the features of the AMS and the implementation process. The panelists will discuss what the coming changes may mean for components in terms of processes and procedures, and new opportunities.  A brief system demo will be included.  Ample time will be included for questions.

David Dillon has been the architecture critic for the Dallas Morning News since 1983. He has written ten books, including Dallas Architecture 1936-1986, The Architecture of O'Neil Ford, The Miller Garden: Icon of Modernism, and Kallmann, McKinnell & Wood. Mr. Dillon is also the author of the new plan for Washington, DC, Extending the Legacy, as well as the plan for the White House and President's Park. He is a contributing editor to Architectural Record and writes regularly for numerous national design and planning magazines, including Landscape Architecture, Preservation and Planning.  His presentation will focus on his approach to writing about architecture and planning for a large general audience.

Session 5.  Engaging a Broader Audience with Your Component Magazine

Component executives, editors, and communications directors will glean new insight into how to make their magazines strong and engaging voices for design excellence in the built environment. Three component-magazine editors will discuss the balancing act of writing and editing for both architects and a general audience. William Richards, editor of Inform, will address the challenge of negotiating design advocacy and design reporting. Chris Hudson will outline Architecture Minnesota's 2006 redesign and recalibration from a magazine for architects to a magazine about architects. Stephen Sharpe, editor of Texas Architect, will examine the extent to which a component magazine can or should be a forum for architectural debate and criticism. They will be joined by John Braymer, PhD, Hon. AIA, of the Virginia Society AIA and Beverly Hauschild-Baron, Hon. AIA, of AIA Minnesota, who will address the challenges of increasing circulation and distribution on a limited budget.

Session 6. Government Relations Partnerships: How National Can Work with Your Component's Advocacy Program

Join the AIA Government Relations staff for an open forum on how they can best support your component's advocacy programs. Discuss tools and resources available to CACE and component leaders such as research materials, on-line advocacy, bill tracking, action kits, template legislation and networks. Time will be devoted to a discussion on the key legislative issues at local, state and federal levels and how components can work together. Also learn about the new local government network and share thoughts on what your component needs to take proactive stances on key advocacy issues.
