historic buildings and colonial sites.

The AIA Board of Directors' vote to create a sustainable design
mandatory continuing education (MCE) requirement for members goes
into effect on January 1, 2009 and continues through December 31,
2012. As this area becomes increasingly mainstream and embedded in
practice, the profession must continuously take responsibility for
their role in creating the built environment. This session will
discuss the role of sustainable design continuing professional
education in advancing the AIA Strategic Plan's sustainable design
initiatives such as SustAIAnability 2030 and 50to50. The
session will also explore plans of action for components and the
AIA national continuing education department in working
collaboratively to meet both the overarching strategic initiatives
and member needs.

David Dillon has been the architecture critic for the Dallas
Morning News since 1983. He has written ten books, including Dallas
Architecture 1936-1986, The Architecture of O'Neil Ford, The Miller
Garden: Icon of Modernism, and Kallmann, McKinnell & Wood. Mr.
Dillon is also the author of the new plan for Washington, DC,
Extending the Legacy, as well as the plan for the White House and
President's Park. He is a contributing editor to Architectural
Record and writes regularly for numerous national design and
planning magazines, including Landscape Architecture, Preservation
and Planning. His presentation will focus on his approach to
writing about architecture and planning for a large general
audience.

Component executives, editors, and communications directors will
glean new insight into how to make their magazines strong and
engaging voices for design excellence in the built environment.
Three component-magazine editors will discuss the balancing act of
writing and editing for both architects and a general audience.
William Richards, editor of Inform, will address the challenge of
negotiating design advocacy and design reporting. Chris Hudson will
outline Architecture Minnesota's 2006 redesign and recalibration
from a magazine for architects to a magazine about architects.
Stephen Sharpe, editor of Texas Architect, will examine the extent
to which a component magazine can or should be a forum for
architectural debate and criticism. They will be joined by John
Braymer, PhD, Hon. AIA, of the Virginia Society AIA and Beverly
Hauschild-Baron, Hon. AIA, of AIA Minnesota, who will address the
challenges of increasing circulation and distribution on a limited
budget.
Session 6. Government Relations Partnerships: How
National Can Work with Your Component's Advocacy Program

Join the AIA Government Relations staff for an open forum on how
they can best support your component's advocacy programs. Discuss
tools and resources available to CACE and component leaders such as
research materials, on-line advocacy, bill tracking, action kits,

federal levels and how components can work together. Also learn
about the new local government network and share thoughts on what
