2015 Grassroots, March 4-6

AIA-Accordion

The AIA’s 41st annual Grassroots Leadership and Legislative Conference, March 4-6, 2015

Guided by a vision for the future of the profession, the conference provides AIA leaders with tools to influence and pursue action that will strengthen their components, firms, communities and society at large. There are opportunities for creative dialogue through general sessions, workshops, networking and peer to peer connections. Leaders exchange information and ideas, provide input on AIA initiatives and advocate the AIA’s federal agenda to members of Congress, working collectively toward a better future for architects. The agenda emphasizes component leadership and includes a dynamic legislative conference and workshops designed to help component officers and aspiring leaders become effective chapter and civic leaders.

This exclusive event, for AIA leaders only, gives volunteers the opportunity to gain information and knowledge through workshops designed to help participants in their leadership and advocacy roles.

Advocacy @ Grassroots

In a few short weeks, AIA members from across the country will descend on Washington for the 2015 Grassroots Leadership & Legislative Conference. What do you need to prepare? We’ve got you covered.

The visits to Capitol Hill will take place on Thursday, March 5. Local and state components are in charge of scheduling meetings with legislators on behalf of the members attending the conference. However, if you are attending from an unstaffed component, you are responsible for scheduling the appropriate meetings yourself. A sample scheduling request is available for component and member use here.

Remember that these meetings can be with the legislator and/or their staff, and the scheduling process takes persistence. Offices receive many scheduling requests per day, so follow up on your request with the scheduler will be necessary. As each meeting is scheduled, please enter the meeting information in our online portal. NOTE: please contact Amanda Stratton directly with changes to meetings already entered in the portal.

During the meetings on the Hill, AIA members will be asking the following of legislators:

    1. Protect and enhance the federal historic tax credit (HTC)

    2. Cosponsor the Safe Building Code Incentive Act, which encourages states to voluntarily adopt and enforce nationally recognized model building codes for residential and commercial structures in order to qualify for additional post-disaster FEMA grants.

    3. Cosponsor the National Design Services Act, which extends to architecture graduates student debt relief in exchange for work in underserved communities.

Advocacy staff conducted Grassroots briefings to go over the federal agenda in detail during the week of February 2 to prepare attendees for their Hill meetings. Missed the briefings? A recording of one of the sessions will be available shortly.

The official issue briefs and talking points will be available shortly. They will be emailed out to attendees and posted on this page. Please do not wait until the issue briefs and talking points are available to start scheduling your meetings. The three points listed above will be sufficient in letting Hill staff know what will be discussed.

For any questions regarding the Hill visits & scheduling, please contact Amanda Stratton at amandastratton@aia.org.

Component Registration by State

A list of registrants by state. These lists are for component planning purposes only and will not include people who register on-site.

Travel Stipend - Deadline: January 23

A travel stipend was created to provide monetary assistance to component leaders and component executives who would not be able to attend Grassroots without some financial support. The AIA believes that the investment to support our leaders is a crucial part of its mission. Due to budgetary constraints, assistance will not be afforded to all components but every effort will be made to help as many components as possible. First priority will be given to components that haven’t been able to send any of their leaders to Grassroots for the past three years. Consideration will NOT be given to components that have received stipends in the past three years.

Restaurant List & Component Peer Groups

Restaurants
For your convenience, a list of restaurants accessible to the conference hotel is available.

Component Peer Groups
In the 1980’s, component peer groups were created to provide component leaders with a venue in which they could discuss issues and share ideas with other component leaders.

Originally, components of the same size that shared comparable budgets, membership numbers, and staff size were grouped together. However, as a result of last year’s evaluations, new groupings were created to better suit the deeper commonalities of components and create more meaningful conversations. Download the new Peer Group list.
