Tour #2: The Historic Octagon. One of the oldest buildings in the Federal City, the Octagon played a unique role in the creation of our Nation’s Capital and the history of the new republic. This tour considers how the decision of the Tayloe family to build the Octagon was key to the realization of L’Enfant’s grand vision for the new city and how, later, the Octagon was the setting for one of the longest and most durable friendships between two great nations.
