This new AIA Center for Communities by Design web
resource demonstrates the expertise architects contribute to
community design. This first group of eight award winning plans
resulted in more than 1.1 billion dollars of private and public
funding for economic development activities, more than 10 million
square feet of office, retail and hotel space, and over 500 miles
of parks and trails. Intense citizen involvement through public
meetings, charrettes and stakeholder interviews, informed all of
the plans. Communities by Design: Built Works projects have changed
the economic, environmental and physical landscapes of all of the
communities featured here.
Based upon the AIA Communities by Design's 10 Principles for Livable Communities,
Built Works contributors discuss the projects goals, plan
implementation process, and the community impact of their
recommendations while sharing the community lessons learned. These
featured projects, led by award winning AIA architects, serve as a
community design resource and demonstrate the positive impact of
thoughtful community design and civic engagement in our
nations communities. Built Works provides architects,
citizens, elected officials, and other design professionals with
tangible examples of communities energized and revitalized through
urban design plans using the AIAs 10 principles. The
communities range in size from small towns to entire regions; all
involve AIA architects working with communities, elected officials,
and other design professionals to improve communities through civic
engagement and community design.
