Norbert Young Honored with Kemper Award for Service to the Profession
The AIA Board of Directors on December 2 elected Norbert W. Young Jr., FAIA, president of McGraw-Hill Construction, as the 2005 recipient of the Edward C. Kemper Award. Named in honor of the AIA’s first executive director, the award recognizes individuals who contribute significantly to the profession of architecture through service to the Institute.

MASTERSPEC Planning Transition to MasterFormat 2004
The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) recently released its 2004 edition of MasterFormat, which is a total revamping of the 1995 edition of its industry-standard classification system for construction-related products and processes. Although this revision is a normal update on the part of CSI, the 2004 edition is a dramatic improvement. MASTERSPEC will begin an implementation of the new system beginning mid-year 2005.

Call for Comments: Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital and Health Care Facilities
In April 2001 the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) introduced the 2001 edition of the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital and Health Care Facilities. The Guidelines are referenced by architects, engineers, and health care professionals throughout the United States and in other countries who are planning new or renovated health care construction. Authorities in 42 states, the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and several federal agencies use the Guidelines as a reference code or standard when reviewing construction designs and plans and completed health care facilities
