commentary; recommended suggested changes in law to permit
architects to lead Design-Build; and worked with DBIA and AIA staff
to track state legislation.

on design-build laws enacted.
-
2007 DB Chair, Bill Quatman, FAIA, led a full-day workshop in

As you can see, 2007 was a year full of success, and we hope the
value you received as a member of the Design-Build KC was just as
rewarding.
We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to
William Quatman, FAIA, of Shugart Thompson & Kilroy, for
his tremendous leadership as 2007 Chair of the Design-Build
Advisory Group, and without whose efforts the accomplishments of
2007 could not have been realized. Bill has completed his tenure on
the AG and has stepped down from his official role on the Advisory
Group, but we look forward to his continued involvement.
For 2008, I welcome our newest member Rebekah Gladson, AIA,
of UC Irvine Design & Construction Services. Rebekah joins we
two chairs, as well as William Carpenter, FAIA, of Carpenter
Architects, and Betsy Downs, AIA, of OWP/P Inc., on the DB
Knowledge Community Advisory Group.
2008 promises to continue to build upon last years successes
with continuity for a number of programs, as well as new
initiatives and collaborations.
Goals for 2008
Education Programs
-
Modification of the popular Design-Build education programs
developed and presented in prior years into a series of 90
minute AIA Webinars on a variety of topics related to the
architects role in Design-Build. The first of these Webinars
will be held on April 9, 1-2:30 p.m. ET, and will offer 1.5
AIA CES LUs. Topics covered in this session will include: a
general history of Design-Build; analysis of the growth of
Design-Build through industry statistics; reasons why architects
should be in the leadership role of Design-Build; important teaming
aspects of the process; personality differences between different
project partners; and other related concerns. For more info
please see the Webinar
website.
-
Continuation of the development of podcasts as a means of
delivering short, 20-30 minute presentations by industry leaders on
various aspects of Design-Build. We encourage you to review the
current podcasts on design-build topics online.
-
Collaboration with DBIA on regional 1-day workshops, in
conjunction with AIA local components and DBIA chapters. More
information will be available at www.aia.org/db.
Communication with Knowledge Community Members, and More Member
Involvement
-
Development of a list of architect/Design-Build practitioners for
interns looking for work in a Design-Build setting. We encourage
you to update your member profile on AIAs online databases in
order to market your Design-Build practice to clients, and to
promote networking with colleagues and emerging professionals.
When you update your listing, note your Design-Build expertise in
Architect Finder on the AIA Website at http://architectfinder.aia.org
and then create a profile of your practice, including images of
your work, on Soloso at http://www.aia.org (click on
add to your Soloso profile).
-
Communication via the Design-Build web site (www.aia.org/db); Master
Builder, our quarterly e-newsletter; the above noted
educational programs, webinars and podcasts; targeted e-mail to KC
members; and continued development of subcommittees of the
Design-Build KC on specific topics of interest to AIA members.
We encourage your participation, and if you would like to get
involved, please contact us at db@aia.org.
-
Communication through subcommittees: in 2006, we started an
aggressive subcommittee structure in an effort to reach more
members and to identify leaders within our membership who have
knowledge to share on various topics of interest. We currently have
eleven (11) subcommittees. In 2008 we will continue to grow the
membership of these committees and to engage more members of the KC
via these vehicles.
Collaboration
-
Continuation of conversations with other AIA Knowledge Communities
on topics of mutual interest and on Integrated Project Delivery
issues, including Public Architects (PA), Small Project
Practitioners (SPP), Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP),
Practice Management (PMKC) and others. As in past years, AIA/DB
will continue to work with other industry organizations, including
BOMA, AGC, ABC, DBIA, NSPE and ACEC, and will continue to
co-sponsor the DBIA National Conference.
Industry-Wide Code of Ethics
-
Leading the task of developing an industry-wide Code of Ethics for
Design-Build Projects, in the private and public sectors, as a
cooperative effort of the American Council for Construction
Education, AGC, DBIA, NSPE, BOMA and the Federal Government.
Legislative Advocacy
-
Continuation of tracking, advocating and educating for Design-Build
legislation, including recommendations on Federal procurement
laws.
Component Outreach
-
Outreach to AIA components by: 1) developing a comprehensive list
of AIA components with Design-Build Committees; 2) creating a
network of component committee chairs; 3) providing for local
postings and guest authors on the Design-Build web site and
Master Builder; 4) within outreach funding, assisting
components in starting Design-Build committees; and 5) providing
education programs, free Webinar access to components, and CES
opportunities.
I hope you can tell by this email how excited we are to build upon
the past success of the Design-Build KC. The Advisory Group cannot
do this alone, however, and we encourage all members to become
engaged through AIA National or your local component.
If you have any questions or comments, or wish to become more
involved in the Design Build Knowledge Community, please email db@aia.org.
Sincerely,
Barry E. Bannett, AIA, DBIA
