Letter From the Chair

Welcome to the inaugural issue of The Integrated Architect, the quarterly online journal of the AIA Design-Build (DB) Knowledge Community. We are excited about our latest efforts to improve communication and become a more effective forum for discussing issues pertaining to learning and the built environment.

We welcome your response and content contributions. Please consider submitting material to our editorial committee for possible inclusion in our next issue, which will highlight our presentations to local and state AIA chapters regarding designer-led design-build services and what’s happening with local AIA design-build committees. If you are involved in such a committee, let us know!

This newsletter will be distributed quarterly to the nearly 12,000 members of the AIA Design-Build Knowledge Community members. To generate dialogue within the architectural design-build community and provide added value to the Design-Build Knowledge Community, future issues of The Integrated Architect will include articles, case studies, and design-build firm profiles written by the Design-Build Advisory Group as well as submittals from the AIA membership. Please send submittals to us at Integrated-Architect@aia.org. Deadlines for submittal will be the first day of the month preceding distribution (March, June, September, and December).

We look forward to hearing from you and hope you find The Integrated Architect to be informative and helpful.

Regards,
Dorwin A.J. Thomas, AIA, MRAIC, DBIA

Now Available: The Architect’s Guide to Design-Build Services

Written with architects in mind, this invaluable resource for architects, contractors, and attorneys involved in designer-led design-build is the first publication of its kind. Harold Adams, FAIA, chairman of RTKL Associates, begins the book with an excellent foreword, suggesting that design-build can in fact prove the skeptics wrong as a viable and sometimes preferred project delivery method. Design-build projects can and do “ensure quality, creative intent and fiscal accountability,” he says. A variety of chapters written by architects and others familiar with the design-build project delivery method provide ready knowledge and insight to those interested in providing design-build services.

Design-build has been with us since the pyramids in Egypt, yet few of us know the truth regarding the history of this delivery method. Borrowing from the manufacturing industry and principles of teaming, The Architect’s Guide to Design-Build Services shows how a new approach to design and construction is rapidly changing the way architects and contractors work together regarding the built environment.

The Architect’s Guide to Design-Build Services was developed by the AIA Design-Build Knowledge Community; was co-edited by G. William Quatman II, Esq., FAIA, DBIA, and Randy Dhar, FRAIC; and includes contributions from more than 30 leaders in design-build project delivery from the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Chapters include the following:

  • An Introduction to Design-Build
  • The Architect as Contractor
  • The RFP and Selection Process
  • Design-Build Contracts
  • Insurance and Bonding for Design-Build
  • Teaming on Design-Build Projects
  • Design-Build for Government Projects
  • Finance and Real Estate Development
  • Licensing Laws for Architects and Contractors
  • International Design-Build
  • Design-Build Education.

Get your copy of The Architect’s Guide to Design-Build Services today. The book was first made available in San Diego at the AIA 2003 National Convention and Expo and sold 600 copies in just two days! To purchase copies from the AIA Store, call 800-242-3837, option 4, or contact AIA National at 202-626-7475.

Ask The Integrated Architect

To communicate and share knowledge more freely, we are providing a forum for members to ask questions of experts in design-build, and we'll publish the answers in the next issue of The Integrated Architect.

We look forward to hearing from you. Please send questions to: Integrated-Architect@aia.org.

Our Vision

The Design-Build Knowledge Community promotes the importance of architects as leaders in delivering design-build services in the following ways:

  • Sharing of knowledge regarding design-build and integration of such knowledge into practice
  • Promoting a culture for the exchange of information regarding design-build and other project delivery methods
  • Creating worthwhile relationships with other architects and those outside the profession
  • Being a resource for colleges and academia
  • Seeking to understand the views of those both within and external to the profession
  • Recognizing AIA National as a resource for information.

Our Mission

The Design-Build Knowledge Community supports the sharing of knowledge with AIA members, allied professions, academia, and owners regarding the design-build project delivery method.

Subcommittee Chairs Needed

The Design-Build Knowledge Committee is looking for qualified persons to chair the following subcommittees: legislation, membership, programs, insurance/bonding, and design-build education. The only prerequisite is that the candidate have an interest in design-build. Among the AIA's 21 knowledge communities, ours is one of the most popular, and we have many goals for 2005. Send your request to: Integrated-Architect@aia.org.
