Raising the Big Top
As a circus tent is taken down, moved, and then put up
again, students learn how the force of tension can be used to make
a structure stand. The analogy of skin and bones is used
throughout this program to explain how the various parts of a
building do diifferent jobs.

Home
This is a look at the variety of homes in neighborhoods
and in nature. Students learn how various types of homes are
built, how materials are used, and how the structures serve the
people and animals that created them. Students learn how
shape creates strength-in this case, a dome-when they put an
ordinary carton of eggs to a weighty test.

Stack It Up
A cathedral is an awesome structure to look at and
explore. But just how is one built? Students learn
firsthand how forces of compression are at work in the walls,
foundation, and arches to support these huge buildings and how the
force of tension contributes to their stability.

Made to Fit
Students learn how architects use principles of
"ergonomics"-making things fit people-when they design and
build buildings.

Light but Strong
How do you get the most building out of the least amount
of building materials? One way is to choose materials that
are light and strong. The shape of the materials is
important, too. Students will see that I-beams and
triangle-shaped braces are just two of the tricks architects
use.
