Introducing the New Requirement
Slide 7

AIA Mandatory Continuing Education: Overview
• The AIA mandatory continuing education requirement for Architect members is 18 learning units annually
• Of those, 8 learning units must address health, safety, and welfare education
Slide 8

AIA Mandatory Continuing Education: New
• The AIA Board of Directors has voted to modify continuing education requirements, effective January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2012
• 4 learning units in sustainable design must be included within the total 18 learning units required annually
• This new requirement applies to membership renewal beginning January 1, 2010
• The Board will review the requirement before its expiration in 2012 and determine if it should remain in place

The Rationale
Slide 14

New Challenges and Opportunities
• In today’s rapidly changing landscape of codes, standards, and new products and materials, architects must maintain an awareness and expertise of an ever-increasing amount of information
• There is a new expectation among clients and the public to look to the expertise of architects for solutions that can help their design and building projects to leave a greener footprint
• The AIA Board recognized the need to help prepare their colleagues and fellow practitioners respond to the latest challenge and opportunity facing the profession

In Practice
Slide 16

Sustainable Design Education Programs
• Applicable courses by AIA/CES registered providers will be identified as sustainable design qualifying, much like courses that carry health, safety, and welfare learning units
• The AIA Continuing Education System team is working with our CES providers to offer members more education opportunities to fulfill this new requirement—including maximizing education opportunities that qualify for sustainable design learning units during the AIA National Convention
Slide 17

Transcripts
• All AIA/CES registered provider programs that qualify will be identified and recorded on your AIA transcript
• If you take a program from a non-AIA/CES registered provider, you will have to indicate that the program qualifies for sustainable design learning units when you submit your structured self-report form and provide supporting information to verify it meets one or more of the sustainable design subject areas and minimum content
