Highlights from 2012 AIA National Convention

A New Staff Member's First Experience

On May 17, the AIA welcomed members, providers, practitioners and product manufacturers from around the globe to our hometown of Washington, DC, for the AIA 2012 National Convention. Convention attendees were invited to keynote speeches by the likes of Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough and Secretary of Housing Shaun Donovan, tours of such landmarks as Capitol Hill and the Washington Monument, and education sessions and friendly receptions sponsored by our valued providers and exhibitors. The sense of shared passion and purpose among members and the wider AIA community was palpable, and from the perspective of the CES team the convention was a resounding success.

As a first-time attendee and, in fact, newest member of the AIA CES team, the convention experience was fascinating, exciting and galvanizing. It was an eye-opening introduction to emerging technologies and best practices in the field, and a warm and collegial welcome to the AIA and its constituent community. Moreover, it was a thrilling perspective on all that the CES team and our providers have done to date, and all that we plan to and can do in the future.

As a professional educator, this last component is particularly exciting for me. I joined the AIA CES team as a Consultant, and will be working closely with the provider training team. I have a Master’s in Education and experience in higher, adult and vocational education, both in classroom instruction and curriculum development. I am especially interested in the CES’s cutting-edge approach to distance and online learning, and am excited to explore with you opportunities afforded by the CES Discovery platform. Like my fellow members of the CES team, I believe that improved understanding and open communication between the AIA and our providers is key to offering the best possible materials, training, and knowledge advancement to our members. To that end, I believe that my past experience in education and curriculum design will serve our mutual objectives well.

State Licensing Board MCE Interactive Map

The CES Team recently launched the STATE MCE Interactive Map. It enables architects to easily view a concise overview of the mandatory continuing education (MCE) requirements needed to maintain licensure. The interactive component of the map has obvious benefits for those who are visual learners. Due to the level of variance in MCE requirements across the 46 jurisdictions that require MCE for licensure, viewing an overview of state MCE requirements in list form is often cumbersome. By referencing CES’s interactive map, architects can hone in on their individual MCE requirements; compare and take note fluidly across jurisdictions. The interactive map is a great resource for our AIA members, as most are licensed in 4 to 6 states and navigate multiple variations of MCE requirements and deadlines in order to maintain state licensure.

While we were able to meet many of you at our Provider Lounge and during our May 18 Provider Reception, we are looking forward to connecting with all of our Providers throughout the year at our workshops and webinars. Course Deactivation - June 5, 2012

On June 5th AIA CES will be deactivating all courses created between 2000 and 2002. If you have a course you are still offering that has not been renewed since 2000, you will need to renew the course before June 5th in order to continue offering it. If you are no longer offering these courses, then no action is necessary. Many courses created during those years do not have a description or learning objectives, so they must be edited before they can be submitted for renewal. To find out if you have courses that are eligible to be deactivated, go to the reports section of CES Discovery and run the “Course Deactivation Report 2000-2002”, using your provider number. Reflecting on Convention Week

I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing Memorial Day weekend! Even though we’ve now moved on to the unofficial start of summer, Convention week is still fresh in the minds of AIA staff, as I’m sure it is for many of you who attended.

Although I have been with AIA since 2010, this was actually the first National Convention I’ve attended. As you know, we live in a virtual world, and sitting in front of a computer reviewing courses is very important. Still, nothing can beat face to face conversation and interaction, and it was great to be able to meet so many Providers in person.

It was my pleasure to be present in our Provider Lounge for many hours over the three-day period. I enjoyed being able to talk, answer questions, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee with those looking to take a break from the classroom or the Expo floor. I was also thankful for the opportunity to mingle at the Provider reception.

•Updated AIA CES templates can be found in the Resources section of CES Discovery. New Quality Assurance slides, course certificate template, course evaluation, and the Speaker Agreement are available. In addition, a new course handout template has been added for your use.
