What’s New in AIA CES?

By Ramiro Solorzano, Assoc. AIA
Manager, CES Provider Audits

I would like to introduce myself as the newest member of the AIA CES team. I just joined as the new CES Provider Audit Manager and I look forward to working closely with all of our Providers. I am an Associate AIA member with a Masters of Architecture from Virginia Tech, I understand the significance of Continuing Education to an Architect’s career.

As the new Manager for Provider Audits, I want to maintain the quality of Continuing Education for our members. I also want to work with all CES Providers to ensure they continue to make significant contributions to our Education System. I am proud to be part of upholding high standards for all our Providers for the AIA.

As I continue throughout the year, I would like to get to know each of our Providers. When I audit a Provider, I am aware of the drawbacks that may come from not meeting AIA standards. However, I will work closely with Providers throughout the process to help you meet those standards. When I contact a CES Provider for an audit, I will be asking for Course Numbers, Course Evaluations, copies of signed Speaker Agreements, presentation materials, and other materials that could pertain to the audit. I will also refer our Providers to upcoming webinars and workshops so that our Providers are up to date on AIA CES policies and procedures. With those resources at hand, I will be an ally to our Providers to get them up to speed on maintaining the best quality of continuing education.

Helpful Resources for AIA CES Providers

By Kristen Albertsen, Consultant, CES Provider Training

This past month, I’ve been spending a lot of time shadowing the AIA Member Care Center, which is a fantastic resource for both AIA members and AIA CES providers alike. While I’ve learned that no two providers - or their questions - are exactly the same, there are some issues that recur often, especially among people new to the CES Discovery system. In this article, I thought I would take a moment to highlight some tips I’ve picked up so far.

First, AIA CES Discovery works best with the Internet Explorer browser. Thus, we recommend using it (rather than Firefox, Chrome, or Opera) when navigating Discovery and submitting materials.

Second, remember that the CES Discovery Resources page is a fantastic trove of information, tutorials, and templates. Here you can find step-by-step instructions for course submission, attendance submission, running reports, and other Discovery activities; you can also find all the templates you need for certificates, speaker agreements, evaluations, and more. We offer other goodies such as a Provider FAQ, the CES Provider logo, and archived provider events.

The Value of Continuing Education for Interns and Emerging Professionals

Interview with Kevin A. Fitzgerald, AIA, PMP, Director, Resource Architect

Maria Sigillito, Manager, Marketing spoke with Kevin Fitzgerald, AIA, PMP, Director, Resource Architect about the value of continuing education providers presenting courses to Interns and Emerging Professionals.

What is the Internship Development Program (IDP)?

The Intern Development Program is a requirement in most jurisdictions for licensure. The program outlines work settings and the experience that an intern must gain in order to sit for the Architect Registration Exam (ARE.) IDP is a program of National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (see www.NCARB.org for more information.)

Could you define supplemental education?

Supplemental Experience is a category in IDP where an intern can gain credit by doing certain exercises or activities, which include attending AIA/CES approved provider continuing education courses. Eligible supplemental experience topics are as broad as the topics most providers offer (a great opportunity for providers!) Ultimately, once the credit is posted to the AIA/CES transcript by the provider, it’s up to the intern to submit the credit to NCARB for credit.

As noted in the NCARB’s Intern Development Program (IDP) Guidelines, interns are required to earn 5,600 hours of training in order to satisfy the IDP experience requirements, most of which must be hours working in an architectural setting. But, new IDP rules allow interns to earn a significant portion through supplemental experience which include courses hosted by an AIA Provider! It’s also important to note that the recently licensed individuals are still learning, and can benefit from continuing education.

Course Reviewer’s Corner

By Michael F. Tamara, Assoc. AIA

Check Out Course Category Definitions!

There are numerous categories under which your courses can fall under. Until now, there have not been specific definitions to go along with those categories. Many of you have expressed a desire for (to be given) a deeper understanding of what they mean.

After a long and careful process, we are happy to present the list of definitions for each of the categories. Multiple sources were used to arrive at these definitions.

The definitions can be found here: Course Topics and Definitions. I encourage every one of you to review them at your leisure, and please do not hesitate to offer any suggestions if you see any that can be improved, elaborated upon, or simplified based upon your own knowledge, insight and experience in your area of expertise.
