Season’s Greetings from the AIA CES Director

By Alla Orlova, MA
Director, CES Provider Network

As I write to share CES Provider news, I feel immense pride in what the Continuing Education team and the provider networks have accomplished in 2012. We've continued to push the envelope, demonstrating how Provider best practices can be implemented, how technology can, should & must be used to promote and provide education. It’s been my 13th year with the American Institute of Architects and my 3rd year directing CES provider Network. The Provider Network has grown in these three years to a network of almost 2,700 organizations offering education to AIA members around the country. Jointly, we offered almost 1million course credits to AIA members in 2012.

In the New Year, I’ll start monthly calls with Providers to keep the dialogue going. The first conference call on January 10 at 2pm ET will be devoted to recent changes in SD requirement for membership and what you need to know as a Provider when developing courses. A phone number for the call will be posted the first week of January on the Provider Events page. As always, feel free to call me directly with any questions you might have.

In addition, I’d like to invite you to meet with the CES team during our special edition workshop in Washington, D.C. on April 25. We will examine what will make our work successful and plan for the future of the CES Provider Network and other CES Provider events.

Latest Continuing Education Update: Sustainable Design Credit Requirement Terminated

By William Murillo, Assoc. AIA
Manager, CES Provider Training

At December’s Annual Meeting of the AIA Board of Directors, the Sustainable Design (SD) Continuing Education Credit Requirement was terminated. Recognizing that sustainable design practices have become a mainstream design intention in the architectural community, the Board of Directors voted to allow the sustainable design education requirement to sunset at the end of calendar year 2012.

AIA members will no longer need to complete the sustainable design requirement to fulfill their AIA continuing education. For 2013, AIA members are required to satisfy a minimum of 18 LUs per year. Of this total, 12 must meet the Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) criteria.

Quality Assurance Statements

By Ramiro Solórzano, Assoc. AIA
Manager, CES Provider Audits

To start out 2013 on the right foot, we ask that all Providers sign the Quality Assurance Statement. We do this annually upon renewal and for new and existing Providers. Many of you signed QA statement when renewing your annual provider subscription. For Providers who haven’t already done so; when you click on the Quality Assurance Statement link login please sign and update your continuing education point of contact via Manage Your CES Provider Subscription Users link or call us at 1-800-242-3837 option 3. The Quality Assurance Statement is very important to the AIA CES so that every year we are all in the same page on our policies and procedures. Not signing the quality assurance statement by January 15, 2013 will impact your access to CES Discovery and all Provider resources. We are all here ready to work with you on providing quality education to our members.

Course Reviewer’s Corner

An Update on the 2013 Course Review Process

Beginning in January, there will be a few minor changes to the course review process due to the decision by the Board to sunset the sustainable design credit requirement. For more information on the decision, please reference William Murillo’s Latest Continuing Education Update.

In 2013, when you are submitting a course for review, Sustainable Design (SD) will no longer be a credit designation option. If you are submitting a course on sustainability or high performance design, please select the HSW credit designation as sustainable design courses fall under the HSW category. All courses previously submitted under the SD designation will now be listed as Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW).

That said, we encourage our Providers to continue to develop courses on sustainable design topics as AIA members are always interested in resources and information about environmentally-friendly and sustainable building practices.
