2013 AIA CES Member Needs Assessment
By Ramiro Solórzano, Assoc. AIA
Manager, CES Provider Audits
This year we did a member needs survey to get a better understanding of the continuing educational needs and the demographics of our membership. I wanted to share our results because this gives all our providers a much better understanding of our members' educational needs. We partnered with McKinley Advisors and surveyed our members, non-members and conducted focus groups. Here are the general results: 2013 Member Needs Assessment
To summarize our membership demographics are across the board. From our licensed architects, associate members and young architects, to our allied design professionals, each group sees the value and significance of your continuing education courses.
The top three topics that our members seek are materials and methods, legal, and construction documents. Our members also are satisfied with the availability of course topics such as methods and materials, occupant comfort, and project types. The importance of continuing education offerings has increased since 2011.

Integrating Social Media Tools into Continuing Education Courses
By Jean Feroldi, Assoc. AIA
Manager, CES Communications + Review
As social media platforms evolve and are adapted for new purposes, it is easy to see why they may be beneficial for adult learning. Yet, where to start and how to implement multimedia into continuing education can leave many people at a loss for effective interactive strategies using social media tools. During our Provider Conference at AIA National Convention, I gave a presentation on Social Media: Learning and Outreach, exploring reasons for why social media can be great for marketing and course engagement. While most Providers who attended my presentation saw the value in social media and its potential to improve their training programs, many questions were raised about specific ways social media can be used in face-to-face and online learning.
By Royce Brown, Assoc. AIA
Manager, CES Programs
Creating a course can be daunting at times. With our tight schedules and pressing projects, sitting down to outline a presentation is usually the last thing anyone wants to do. However, this process is important for participants attending your program. For purposes of simplicity I would like to make the comparison between building a course and building a house.
ABI: Firm Billings Up Nationwide, But Construction Sector Still Lags
By Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA
AIA Chief Economist
Billings at U.S. architecture firms moved up again in July, the third straight monthly increase, and the eleventh time over the past 12 months that firms have reported revenue gains. The July reading was 52.7, improving on the June score of 51.6. The index for new project inquiries also accelerated in July, with a score of 66.4, signifying the strongest growth in new inquiries since late 2005.
Firms in all regions of the country reported billings gains in July. Firms in the Northeast and South indicated particularly strong growth, with ABI scores above 54. In the Midwest and West, firms reported more modest gains. Major construction sectors served by architecture firms also all showed gains for the month. Institutional firms, while reporting only modest gains in recent months, have now recorded 12 straight months of billings growth.
On the Blog: 2013 Web Series PDF Files
Each month, we hold 2-3 Provider webinars on topics ranging from instructional design, CES Discovery software training, AIA CES policies, and marketing AIA CES courses. After a webinar, we usually post the video content to our YouTube channel, but if you would like to have the original PowerPoint presentation as a resource, many are posted on the AIA CES blog. Our goal is to provide continuing education resources in a variety of formats to help you succeed as an AIA CES Provider. If you are looking for something specific - an archived webinar, article, or workshop presentation - just ask! We always strive to develop content and materials for helping you create great courses. We welcome your input and suggestions for new webinars and resources.
