Role of HSW for architects - Why Now?

    By Matthew Welker, Assoc. AIA
    Manager, Strategic Initiatives

As the AIA undertakes a landmark initiative to raise member awareness that design solutions can have positive human health outcomes at varying scales, the continuing education of architects is a critical fulcrum from which we will leverage change. Re-interpreting HSW to include well-being concepts is a first step on the path to re-defining Welfare to Well-Being. The AIA Continuing Education team will immediately begin to review HSW courses with a wider, more informed lens on well-being topics.

    1. The health, happiness, and fortunes of a person or group.
    2. Statutory procedure or social effort designed to promote the basic physical and material well-being of people in need; financial support given for this purpose.

The state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy

AIA CES Launches New Review Rubric Program

    By Hannah Ekman
    Professional Development + Resources

To better serve the diverse knowledge needs of members and the profession, the AIA has launched an education reviewer program. This program will assess AIA CES programs and provide feedback to improve the quality of all learning opportunities offered through the AIA Continuing Education System. AIA members who are part of the reviewer program will evaluate CES courses using a rubric that focuses on three primary areas: course design, instructor evaluation, and education value and assessment.  The results will be shared with providers.

Recognizing Carlo J. Ninassi's Business Acumen for Architects

    By Ramiro Solórzano, Assoc. AIA
    Manager, CES Provider Audits

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Carlo J. Ninassi, AIA who is our primary point of contact for The Pennsylvania State University, Smeal College of Business. Their course, Business Acumen for Architects, addresses a need lacking in the professional development of practicing architects. As a practicing Architect and an educator, Dr. Ninassi's course curriculum is specially designed for Architects to better understand the business aspect of practice. One of the fun things I do with AIA CES is Provider Recognition on best practices. I followed up with Dr. Ninassi to ask him about his course and his contribution to the profession.

Tools for Managing Your Social Media Sites

    By Jean Feroldi, Assoc. AIA
    Manager, CES Communications + Review

On the AIA CES team, we are constantly searching for new ideas on how to help our Providers become better presenters, networkers, and learning facilitators. This year, we have discussed and embarked on many initiatives that we hope will make the CES program a thriving and forward-thinking learning resource for architects.

Over the past year, I have focused on how Providers can use social media tools and software to cultivate interesting and relevant education programs for our AIA members through my presentation Social Media: Engagement, Learning, and Outreach. While my program focuses on using the more common social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) to engage course participants and promote interactivity during a program, I have received many questions about tools that can help make social media easier to manage and more productive. I have compiled a list of resources and websites that I have used or look like an interesting way to maintain and use social media effectively.
