What is Distance Education?

What is Distance Education?

l A method of instruction where there is a separation of place and/or time between the instructor and learner, between fellow learners, and/or the learners and the learning resources. These programs may use several delivery methods, used alone or in combination.

Synchronous vs. Asynchronous

Synchronous vs. Asynchronous

l Synchronous: When the instructor and learner are engaging in the learning activity at the same time (Real time).

l Asynchronous: When the instructor and learner are separated by time and are not engaging in the learning activity simultaneously (i.e. learning “anytime, anyplace, 24/7”)

CES Asynchronous Programs

CES Asynchronous Programs

l Competency-based

l Competency is generally measured by adding a quiz at the end of the program

    l Quiz must contain 10 questions for the first hour of Learning Units given

    l Minimum of five questions added for each additional hour

    l Attendee must receive an 80% or better in order to receive CES credit

Signed Affidavits for Asynchronous Programs

Signed Affidavits for Asynchronous Programs

l At least 10 affidavits must be submitted for each CES Asynchronous Program

      lInclude the name, contact information, and how long it took him/her to complete the course

    l No more than two participants from same organization

    l Total Learning Units awarded calculated by average time in that pilot study group

l Established by LERN

l ILU (International Learning Unit) -internationally recognized method of quantifying knowledge gained during professional development/training activities.

l 1 LU= 1 ILU

Registering a Distance Education Program

Registering a Distance Education Program

l Register on a new Form A

l Each program/media format used is considered a separate program using a new title and new program number

    l (ex: Combined delivery methods- blended learning)

l A complete copy of the program and supporting materials must be submitted with the Form A

l Submit program to Dawn Lanham in our Oklahoma Records Department for review
