A NEW Online Conference! Creating a Sustainable Design Course – June 22-26, 2009
***************************************************************************
Conference Description

This one week virtual conference will offer CES Providers valuable information on understanding the guidelines, creating content and registering a course for AIA/CES Sustainable Design credit.  This virtual conference will review the context of the new AIA Sustainable Design requirement and review strategies and tools the AIA is using to address Sustainable Design issues. This conference will provide helpful hints and models to CES Providers and help you to better understand the framework of Sustainable Design, providing new markets, opportunities, and potential for CES Providers.
The online conference will cover different related modules each day but will be available 24/7.  Faculty will be available each day.  Our guest speakers will share their successful practices. There will be additional resources imbedded in the conference including downloadable power points, pod casts, related links, an inserted web cast with 3D modeling, recommended readings.  Participate in live chats, ask questions, make suggestions, and share your opinions and lessons learned with your cyber classmates.

Modules
Day 1  – Introduction and Overview of Sustainable Design

Learn from experts as to the context of the new Sustainable Design requirement and changes in sustainable design and sustainable design education. Topics include Overview of the AIA/CES Sustainable Design credit guidelines; What sustainable design means to providers; How sustainable design strategies support LEED and other Green Building programs; and Sustainable design as a collaborative, holistic process that is integrated through all phases and systems of a project.

Day 2 – Committee on the Environment Top 10

The AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top 10 Measures of Sustainable Design is one of the foundations of the new AIA/CES credit guidelines. Topics include COTE definition and Measures of Sustainable Design; Relation of the Top 10 to the new AIA/CES credit requirements; and how this supports new opportunities for Providers to move courses in the direction of meeting SD guidelines.

Day 3 – 2030 Challenge (50>>50 )

Another foundation of the AIA Sustainable Design credit requirement is the 50 initial strategies and tools available to help AIA members get to 50 percent carbon reduction - the first step in the 2030 Challenge. Topics include Overview of the program and examples from several strategies; Reasons AIA has taken on this challenge; Life Cycle costs and assessments; How to use these strategies in context with the AIA/COTE Top 10; and how this creates opportunities for Provider to offer sustainable design courses.

Day 4 – AIA/CES Sustainable Design Credit

This module will walk Providers through the process and application to register a CES course for sustainable design credit. It will clarify how the SD credit requirements ties back to the AIA’s Top 10 Measures of Sustainable Design and the 50>>50 strategies. It will highlight key sections of the application process and common errors made by Providers which can delay or even deny course approval.

Day 5 – Innovation in Sustainable Design Education

Understand the current context of Sustainable Design and what it means in opportunities for new markets. This section will present examples and different Provider approaches to offering sustainable design courses. It will clarify how to get started and which framework or context of sustainable design to use. Providers will understand how to improve current courses and develop new programs and learn of the potential avenues for innovation, new processes, and approaches to their product/process/tool.

Objectives

Given online course materials, presentations, and discussions, the AIA/CES Registered Provider in the “Creating a Sustainable Design course” workshop should be able to register a quality continuing education course for AIA/CES Sustainable Design requirements.

At the end of this conference, participants should be able to:
  • June 22: Define how your product/process/tool relates in context with two other building systems to impact sustainability.
  • June 23: Indicate how your product/process/tool supports the AIA COTE vision that sustainable design seeks to create communities, buildings and products that contribute to the vision of enduring prosperity of all living things.
  • June 24: Describe how your product/process/tool can contribute to carbon reduction, also referred to as the 2030 Challenge, reference 50>>50.
  • June 25: Complete an application to register a course for AIA/CES SD credit. Will include a sample of successful courses.
  • June 26:  Name three resources to track for updated industry information on sustainable design.  Will include case studies and model projects.

Participants should plan for 30-90 minutes of new material per day. Materials and discussion to stay open through July 3rd.
