How do test candidates who are
currently testing in 3.1 know which tests they should take in order
to make sure they wont lose any sections if transitioned to
4.0?
First, in understanding the answer to this question, it is
important to know that the ARE 3.1 and ARE 4.0 tests contain the
same material in two different layouts. Knowing this, a test-taker
can take 3.1 tests in a strategic way in order to avoid losing any
exam credits earned if they must transition into 4.0. There are
several resources on The National Council of Architectural
Registration Boards' (NCARB) Web site to help test-takers decide
what to take and each person may find that, for them, one works
better than another. For the purpose of answering this question,
however, well use the Whats Different chart
found on NCARBs Web site.
The chart shows the nine sections of the ARE 3.1 in blue and their
corresponding subject matter above in various places and multiple
colors when you scroll over them. The ARE 4.0 sections are below in
green with their subject matter lined up neatly underneath. Now
that you have the feel of the chart, scroll over the blue ARE 3.1
box that says Building Planning. Youll see that four
goldenrod-colored boxes appear; two above 3.1 Building Planning and
two below 4.0 Schematic Design. No other boxes light up. This means
that the subject matter from 3.1 Building Planning is an exact
match to that in 4.0 Schematic Design. Passing 3.1 Building
Planning means test-takers dont have to take 4.0 Schematic
Design if transitioned.
Scroll over 3.1 Mechanical and Electrical Systems, however, and
youll notice all matches up except for a box above 3.1
Building Technology: Structural Layout. This means that in order to
check 4.0 Building Systems off of their list, test-takers must pass
both 3.1 Mechanical and Electrical Systems and 3.1 Building
Technology.
You can now scroll over the other 3.1 test sections and see which
tests candidates would need to take to check each 4.1 test off of
their agenda. The key to planning for those who already have some
3.1 tests under their belt is to figure out which of the tests
they've taken in 3.1 that they need to add another 3.1 test to in
order to have completed a 4.0 test.

Can test candidates use ARE 3.1
study guides to study for the ARE 4.0?
Yes, test candidates can use ARE 3.1 study guides to prepare for
4.0 since the subject matter is the same on both tests, however,
they may find it difficult to navigate through the material in an
order appropriate for the new test. It may be helpful to start with
the free, downloadable ARE 4.0 study
guides from The National Council of Architectural
Registration Boards (NCARB) to gain an understanding of which
material is associated with each test section before trying to use
an ARE 3.1 study guide.
