IDP Supplementary Education

Interns who are employed in an NCARB-recognized Training Setting and students enrolled in a post-professional degree program in architecture may earn IDP credit from supplementary education. Supplementary education may be used to fulfill up to 235 IDP Training Units outside of the minimum requirements in each IDP Training Area. NCARB accepts supplementary education from the following three sources:

  1. Emerging Professional's Companion (EPC)
  2. AIA Continuing Education
  3. Post-Professional Degree in Architecture

Before you begin:

  • Check NCARB's latest conditions for supplementary education.
  • Verify with your state's registration board that these credits are acceptable in your jurisdiction.

Emerging Professional's Companion (EPC)
This resource is a complete revision to the 1992 version of the Supplementary Education Handbook (Supp Ed Handbook) and can be used by interns to receive credit toward IDP. The EPC is updated for current practice models and expanded to include the varied paths that an intern or licensed architect may consider during his or her career in architecture. The intent is to expand the market for this publication to firms and schools of architecture, recognizing that many of the activities involved in the Emerging Professional's Companion contribute to the development of a professional along the life-long learning continuum.

Visit http://www.aia.org/ep_companion to get started.

AIA Continuing Education
The AIA and its providers offer thousands of continuing education programs each year across the country. These programs can be done online, in print or in the classroom. Each hour of AIA approved continuing education earns two hours of IDP credit (in other words, one AIA Learning Unit Hour earns 0.25 IDP Training Units). An AIA transcript must accompany your IDP training reports documenting completion of AIA-approved resources.
IDP Record Holders, click here to find out how to record supplementary education when you are not an AIA member.

Visit AIA's Continuing Education web site for a complete listing of available programs.

Post-Professional Degree in Architecture
If you earn a post-professional degree in architecture after earning a professional degree in architecture from a NAAB-accredited institution, you may earn up to 117 training units (graduating after July 1, 2002) in IDP Training Category D. Credit hours must be in subjects evaluated by NCARB as directly related to architecture.

Note: Please verify with you registration board that these credits are acceptable in your jurisdiction. Check out the NCARB Web site for the latest conditions for supplementary education.

Please contact idp@aia.org if you have any questions about supplementary education in IDP.
