A case study of the Boston Opera House will demonstrate how the
professional architecture and preservation team came together to
rehabilitate this great building and to obtain the 20 percent
federal rehabilitation tax credits as well as the state tax
incentives. The team will discuss the $30 million rehabilitation,
the application process, the secretary of the Interior's Standards
for Rehabiltation Standards, and the various compliance reviews
needed to bring this theater back into productive use.
Learning Objectives:
Explain how to contact the various representatives in your state
and the National Park Service responsible for compliance
review
Evaluate the requirements for submitting a completed application
with the requisite level of documentation, rehabilitation
descriptions, drawings, and specifications
Apply the secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation
to historic projects

Walk the Freedom Trail. Learn how to properly investigate,
document, and assess a historic property by participating in an
actual hands-on assessment of the historic Old South Meeting House.
Led by a team of experienced preservation architects, you will
review what to look for to identify significant features, historic
significance, and appropriate treatments as well as the role your
documentation can play in guiding a structure's future.
Learning Objectives:
Review the purpose, history, methodology, philosophy, and value of
the Historic Structure Reports
Identify, investigate, and analyze character-defining features and
determine their integrity and historic significance
Develop recommendations for treatment using the secretary of the
Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation, the National Park
Service's Technical and Preservation Briefs, and the findings of
the assessment process
