Description:
There are a number of Knowledge Community Managers on the KC
Team with specific responsibilities based on function and
expertise. Each Manager provides functional support in a team-based
approach to a variety of projects, products and activities, which
are assigned according to applicable skill set and other
factors.
Managers will serve as an advocate, support and facilitate
activities for several specialized membership groups called
Knowledge Communities. They work closely with volunteer leaders to
develop knowledge in different areas of architectural specialty
such as healthcare architecture or religious architecture. Managers
facilitate the planning and development of a variety of projects
including conferences, webinars, web and print publications, award
programs and workshops. The managers are responsible for
coordinating efforts with other AIA departments that support KC
activities.
The Managers report directly to a Director and work with a
support team of associates, editors, meeting planners, design staff
and marketing staff, and other managers to complete their
tasks.
Duties: Manages assigned projects in the areas of content
development, budget stewardship, event planning, knowledge and
information delivery via print and electronic means, communications
and marketing.
Including the production and delivery of some original
content (10% time)
Including significant administration (website maintainence,
Lyris formatting, and agenda and email communication with volunteer
leadership) and data entry for all programs (15%)
Work with internal AIA departments to shepherd projects
through AIA procedures (marketing, meetings, communications,
editorial and design) (15%)
Participate in up to 12 hours monthly of conference
calls.
Ensure SOLOSO is the tool of choice for online networking by
the KCs market the member profile set-up and use of interest
area blogs. Monitor blogs, postings and ensure dynamic feedback by
volunteers or AIA staff.
Ensure KCs are posting and tagging content for AIA website
and SOLOSO.
Focuses on program development and coordination, budget
review, facilitation and client management (e.g. volunteer
leadership of the AIAs various Knowledge Communities, etc.;
as well as internal relationships between depts. (meetings,
editorial and design etc.)
Balances and Advocates member goals and aspirations for all
projects (current, new and sunset) with furthering the AIA
strategic plan, while maintaining project development within AIA
staff resource limits
Communicate with Sponsorship department as needed to
facilitate the development of paper work to support KC established
sponsorships; and to solicit advice on developing new sponsorship
opportunities; identify appropriate sponsor activities for specific
Knowledge Community projects; recruit members to generate sponsor
contacts.
Ability to juggle multiple projects that have participation
from various department, external organizations and AIA
components.
Top customer service skills to support high amount of
interaction with members, allied organizations and internal
staff.
Accomplished level of skill with Microsoft Office.
Projects may include, but are not limited to:
content development for conferences, workshops, seminars,
virtual seminars, web conferences, tours, networking events;
books, enewsletters, blogs and journals; and proceedings
from conferences and workshops
design competitions and/or awards;
general and member inquiries regarding subject matter
related to the assigned Knowledge Communities;
interdepartmental and interorganizational staff teams on
projects or other activities pertinent to the subject matter within
assigned Knowledge Communities

Experience:
Outstanding written/oral communication skills and organizational
skills. Considerable knowledge of and skill in monitoring costs,
quality and on-time performance of project activities using
standard project management techniques. Considerable skill in needs
assessment, and defining/designing projects. Skill in facilitation,
team building, collaborative problem solving, conflict resolution,
and systems/process development. Skill in negotiation and active
listening. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office, including Word,
Excel, Access, Project and Outlook, as well as familiarity with
web-based research and information dissemination applications.
Familiarity with educational program marketing, knowledge capture
and delivery processes. Ability to coordinate a diverse resource
pool, to interact effectively in an individual membership
environment, recognize and identify member concerns, analyze issues
and concepts to correctly state a problem and develop recommended
solutions. Ability to work autonomously.
Bachelors Degree in Business, Marketing, Public
Relations/Communications, Architecture or related fields plus at
least two years of project management experience or equivalent
combination of education and experience. Specific, applicable and
demonstrated project management experience and/or education are
highly desirable. Experience in working with associations a plus.
Travel at least 2 times a year to support AIA national and KC
events.
Supervisory Requirements:
Utilizes pooled resources of meeting planners, marketing/design
staff, editorial staff and administrative assistants, but does not
hold direct supervisory responsibilities.
