Communities across the country have become increasingly
concerned with issues of livability. Numerous surveys show
that government officials, private businesses, and individual
citizens are trying to address the quality of life in their
community and how they can preserve or improve it.
Because architects can listen to a community's needs and translate
them into visible and viable options, architects are a
valuable resource to communities seeking to improve their quality
of life.
* Good design makes economic sense: an attractive community will
draw new residents, jobs, and investment.
* Working together, community members can create a vision of what
they want their community to be and then implement it.
* When the residents of a community create their own plan for the
future, they are more likely to trust it and feel a sense of
stewardship that will keep the plan relevant, useful, and adaptable
to change over many years.
The AIA's 10 Principles for Livable
Communities outlines how to achieve a better, more livable
built environment.
