The AIA is the voice of the architecture profession. We’re more than 83,000 members strong.

Based in Washington, D.C., the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has been the leading professional membership association for licensed architects, emerging professionals, and allied partners since 1857.

Each year the AIA

Sponsors hundreds of continuing education experiences to help architects maintain their licensure
Offers more than 100 forms and contracts that define relationships and terms involved in the design and construction industry
Publishes more than 20 online publications
Provides countless Web-based resources for emerging architecture professionals
Helps members connect with each other in more than 20 knowledge communities, 300 some local and state components, and several blogs
Conducts market research and provides analysis of the economic factors that affect the business of architecture
Hosts the annual AIA National Convention and Design Exposition
Serves as an advocate of the architecture profession
Champions architects’ future through an annual ad campaign

Member Groups

Member groups are composed of categories of subgroups in which all or a majority of participants are also members of the AIA.

Key Strategic Initiatives

Sustainability. Healthy, environmentally friendly buildings should be our goal, and the AIA is leading the way for sustainable building.
Integrated Project Delivery. Effectively leading a team of design and construction professionals, combined with new technologies available, will help your team meet your project's goals on time and on budget.
Diversity. We're striving to expand the diversity of the design professions to mirror the society we serve. And we're doing it by example.

AIA Components—Local, State, and National

Through more than 300 state and local components (or chapters), AIA members are linked into a supportive network, providing members an opportunity to make a significant difference for the profession.

Local Components
Local components sponsor a wide range of activities, including educational conferences, community service projects, postdisaster and urban design workshops, Architect Registration Exam preparation classes, design award programs, and community awareness campaigns.

State Components
Many state components offer educational conferences and networking opportunities and they play an integral role in representing your interests before state legislatures and relatory agencies on architecture-related issues.

National Component
The national component of the AIA unites local and state members in the common causes of advocacy, community, and knowledge. Networking and national volunteer opportunities are available through knowledge communities and the Center for Communities by Design.
