Dear Members of the Public Architects Knowledge Community (PA):
As the 2008 chair, I would like to thank you for your continued
membership in Public Architects, and take this opportunity to
update you on PAs accomplishments for 2007 and inform you of
our plans for this year.
Public Architect Training Workshop (PATW) at the National AIA
Convention
In 2007, the PATW was held in San Antonio, and with nearly 300
attendees, it was a great success. Some of the exciting topics
included building information modeling (BIM), sustainable design,
and project delivery. The 2008 PATW will be held in Boston on May
14. The AIA Public Architects Knowledge Community invites you to
join other public-sector architects from all levels of government
to discuss public architecture business and practice. This one-day
preconvention workshop explores the roles and responsibilities of
architects who are involved in the design of public buildings, as
well as some of the latest ideas in public architecture.
Presentations will topics such as case studies of several projects
featuring sustainable design and related code compliance issues,
procurement challenges, and pre-project planning strategies.
Concurrent sessions allow attendees to customize their learning
experience. Participants may earn 6.75 AIA CES LUs, including up to
4.5 health, safety, and welfare (HSW) credits for attending the
entire workshop. For more information on this workshop, visit the
Continuing Education section of the
AIA National Convention website.
Component Outreach
The Component Outreach Receptions were started a few years ago,
wherein at each of the AIA National Convention sites we work with
the local AIA chapter to establish a PA committee. If you would
like to start a Public Architects committee at your chapter, please
contact us at pa@aia.org.
Liaison Efforts with the Corporate Architect and Facility
Managers
Public Architects KC will continue liaison efforts with the
Corporate Architect and Facility Managers KC, as we share many
professional activities and would like to develop mutual benefits
for our members. We will gather together for a reception during the
AIA National Convention on May 15, and we invite all members to
attend:
AIA Committee of Corporate Architects and Facility Management
and Public Architects Committee
Networking Reception (E19)
May 15, 2008, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Join the AIA Committee of Corporate Architects and Facility
Management and the AIA Public Architects Committee for an evening
of networking and fun at the South Boston Seaport District's newest
event facility, Lighthouse II. Lighthouse II has striking views of
Boston Harbor and the surrounding skyline. Brennan Beer Gorman
Architects and Brennan Beer Gorman Monk Interior (BBG/BBGM) of New
York City designed the building with a cutting-edge LED feature
wall. This reception supports the Freedom by Design program, so
come hear about the great things the American Institute of
Architecture Students is achieving through the program. Enjoy hors
d'oeuvres, an open bar, and the excitement of door prize drawings.
For more information, see the entry in the
AIA 2008 Convention Guide.
The Cornerstone eNewsletter
The Cornerstone
eNewsletter continues to provide insightful, relevant, and
timely topics that will train, educate, and inspire us to do our
best work. We will continue to build upon its success and encourage
everyone to take the time to open and read each issue. We also
encourage you to submit articles, case studies or other
information. Look for a call for submissions in each issue.
Post-Occupancy Evaluations
We continue to develop the process of post-occupancy evaluations
(POE), started in 2006. To accomplish this, we are working with the
National Association of State Facility Administrators (NASFA),
which will provide invaluable information on the development and
use of the POE.
Allied Organizations and Agencies
In 2008 we continue to expand relationships with allied
organizations and agencies, such as NASFA and its sister
organization, the National Association of State Administrators
(NASA). We also believe that we can play a role with the Associated
General Contractors of America (AGC) in procurement-related
issues.
Workshops on project delivery
Workshops on project delivery and procurement-related issues are in
the works, to be held in conjunction with a NASFA regional
conference, as well as other locations to be determined. More
information will be posted on the PA web site at www.aia.org/pa.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Bruce
Bockstael, FAIA, of the Department of Public Works, State of
Connecticut, for his tremendous leadership and efforts on the PA
Advisory Group. Bruce has completed his tenure on the AG, but we
look forward to his continued involvement.
For 2008, I welcome our newest members, Christine Snetter,
AIA, of Thomas Jefferson National Lab, and Jeffery
Hooghouse, R.A., AIA, DBIA, AVS, of the US Army Corps of
Engineers, to the PA Advisory Group. Christine and Jeff join
Gerald Hines, AIA, of National Institutes of Health (2009 PA
Chair), and David Frommer, AIA, NCARB, of UNLV Planning
& Construction.
I hope you can tell by this email how excited we are to build upon
the past success of the Public Architects, and we encourage all
members to become engaged through AIA National or your local AIA
component. If you have any questions or comments, or wish to become
more involved in PA, please email pa@aia.org.
Sincerely,
David Hart, AIA - 2008 Chair
