The Pre-AIA Convention,
Public Architects Training Workshop (PATW) will be held in Boston,
Mass, on May 14, 2008. Plans are just about completed for a
fantastic event that you do not want to miss. The following is a
brief overview of the keynote speakers and the sessions
planned:
The opening address for the workshop will feature David B.
Perini, Commissioner, Division of Capital Asset Management,
Commonwealth of Massachusetts, who plans to share some of the
public sector facilities planning actions of the local area.
At mid-day during lunch our keynote speaker will be Paul
Grogan, President, Boston Foundation, who will share his vision of
the Future of the American City.
The closing speaker Richard Swett, FAIA, a former US
Ambassador, will honor us with his thoughts on
Leadership
There will be three concurrent sessions, which start after
the opening address, focused on Pre-project Planning
Issues, Planning Strategies/Sustainable Design,
and Case Studies, featuring speakers with extensive
knowledge of public sector architecture and its issues, for
example:
- Scott Simpson, FAIA - Hypertrack, a new
approach for integrated project delivery focused on collaboration
and team-based design.
- Phil Bernstein, Autodesk - lessons learned dealing with the
transition to Building Information Modeling from CADD.

Codes

Features, illustrating several GSA projects
There will be an afternoon session assembling all of the
attendees for a Roundtable/Open Discussion will focus
on the Project Planning Processes, Experiences from Concept
to Occupancy. During this session, a panel will engage the
audience in a discussion to share the experiences on how Public
Architects are dealing with a variety of planning challenges
throughout the planning continuum. We also encourage you to
complete the survey instrument (click here), which will be used for
our discussion on the Experiences from Concept to Occupancy. The
results of a survey, to be shared with the PA Knowledge Community,
will be the basis for what is expected to be a lively discussion on
this topic.
Finally, more detailed information on registration for the AIA
Convention and the PATW will be distributed soon. Over the past
several years, the PATW has assembled over 200 Public Architects
from various sectors across the country, and this year the
expectation is the same. You do not want to miss this event.
Gerald W. Hines, AIA, is an architect for the National
Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Md. He is the 2008 Public
Architects Training Workshop chair and will be the chair of the
2009 Public Architects Advisory Group.
